Help...windshield Rattle/tapping

Recommended Posts

Hey all...suddenly this week I have a tapping noise coming from my windshield. Mostly it sounds like its coming from around the exterior passenger pillar. The sound is like someone rapidly tapping their finger nails on the windshield...I know that sounds stupid. I'm under warranty so I could just take it in but hate to be without my truck. I just put bug guard on the hood last weekend...any chance the bug guard could be deflecting airflow such that it is making the exterior gasket/trim rattle? Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix?

Oh yeah...mine is a 2009 SIlverado Crew LTZ.

It's the bug guard deflecting airflow. Just lift the edes of the rubber molding on the sides of the windshield and run a small bead of silicone caulk down it or get some 3m 2 sided tape and put under the molding. I had the same problem on my 02 and from reading posts on here the problem still pops up after the bug shield installation. I think gm may even have a tsb out on it. That ticking or tapping noise will drive you crazy.

Yep, it's a common issue with the bug guards. Easy fix though. Go to your local auto store and pick up a roll of 3M Weatherstrip tape and put it under the trim on the pass side of the windshield along the A-Pillar. It's easier to get under there if you open the pass door and lift up the rubber seal and loosen the screws first.

Thanks Guys! We are talking about the exterior gasket that runs up the pillar...correct? The comment about losening the screw confused me?

Yep. If you open your door and look under the rubber seal, you will see some small screws that hold down the windshield trim. Go look and you will see what I mean. You can get the tape under there without doing this, but it's MUCH easier if you loosen them. takes about 2 minutes, literally.

yup, my '01 does it with the bugshield on, but it's on the drivers side and its the plastic corner piece part of the cowel near the hood hinge. That small piece pops off and I stuck the 3M tape under it and poped it back on.

So depending on where the noise seems to be coming from there are a couple different possibilities/solutions
