Transmission Thump

What is the problem with these transmissions? After like 30k miles the transmission begins to bang. Ive taken it to the dealer and they tell me its simply the driveshaft that moves and that all it requires is a little grease. I find that hard top believe when the transmission bangs when you are stopped at a light. My truck has 22k Miles, however my company trucks have over 40K and most of the 1500s have this issue. Can someone please explain whats the deal?

:omg:

Thanks

Take it in and under warranty they should replace the yoke with a nickle plated one.

What difference does that make? I just ask so I can explain when I am asked.

I believe they started putting the Nickle Plated Yokes in back around 2004. I believe the Nickle Plated prevented slipage between the shaft and the yoke which was a common cause for slip yoke clunk in the 99-03 models. (my 99 had it big time)

I have an '08. It slips mostly when you lift off the brake. I hope this can solve that problem. Thanks

In my experience, if you stop somewhat abruptly, the trans doesn't shift back down to 1st. If you let the truck roll forward a few inches before the light turns green, the trans downshifts, and no thump. This is now a habit for me to ease forward 6 inches for the downshift at stop lights and stop signs. Give it a try.

This is very apparent in my truck aswell, sounds like a drivetrain slop.. Not really much to done about it, long driveshaft, lots of power you usually get a clunk.

This is a function of a solid rear axle vehicle. I was going to try and explain this but decided to resort to Google.

A universal joint (Cardan type) and splined slip yoke are located at the transmission end of the shaft, where they are held in alignment by a bushing in the transmission rear extension. The slip yoke permits fore and aft movement of the driveshaft as the differential assembly moves up and down. The spline is lubricated internally by transmission lubrication or grease. An oil seal at the transmission prevents leakage and protects the slip yoke from dust, dirt and other harmful material . From some automatic transmissions, the slip yoke spline is lubricated with grease and provided with a small vent hole. The slip yokes should be inspected to be sure the vent hole is clear

My '93 S-10 did it, 2001 RAM did it (hated that thing,) my 2000 Silverado did it, my 2004 Silverado did it, my 2005 F150 did it (hated this one too,) and my 2005 Yukon does it. All rear or 4x4 vehicles. As a previous poster said, grease can and should help and the "feature" is exacerbated with more aggressive driving. Some slip yokes have zerks so they can be greased.

Basically the same theory as the PTO on a smaller tractor.

Hope this helps. I've never owned or ridden in a RWD truck/suv that didn't do this at some point. The dodges were REALLY noticeable. Sometimes you would think someone bumped you it would clunk so hard.
