My buddy has 06 Duramax w/ a 6inch suspension lift and it is hard as hell to turn. Put a brand new stock steering pump on it and made a little difference but not much. Is there such a thing as a high performance or heavy duty steering pump he could try? Any suggestions would be helpful thanks

Sounds like to me your buddys steering is binding up from the lift. I would disconnect the steering arm and get the front wheels off the ground and try turning the steering by hand by grabing the front wheel.

The steering pumps are weak. I have seen something that suggests an alternate steering box, a TSB I think.

A lot of folks have this problem with the dmax.

I had the same sort of problem with my 03 duramax. My problem stemmed from a sticking hydro-boost regulating valve. It's located in the line returning to the resevoir from the brake master cylinder. It's only a $16 part but it's not a fun part to change. Mine wasn't just permantly hung up though it would stick and release from time to time while turning through parking lots. I changed out the vavle, and when I refilled the resivoir, I used about 1/3 of the capacity with Lucas Oil. It did the trick.

his sometimes turn really easy too and then other times itll take both hands to turn it. Thanks for the help

He will notice that it is easier when off the brakes. The same pump supplies both. Proportioning at idle is very bad, that's my guess.
