Bilstein Shocks

I have a 2004 Z71 (stock suspension) with just under 50k miles and the ride is definitely getting rougher the past month or two...so I figure I its time for some new shocks. I have been searching the forum here for what shocks seem to be the most preferred...and it looks to be overwhelmingly in favor of Bilstein HDs. I was looking at shockwarehouse and found a package deal on Biltstein HDs for all 4 corners (~$260). The part number for the font shocks is F4-BE5-6500-H0. The part number for the rear shocks s F4-BE5-2905-H1. My current driving habits are around 90% highway & 10% light offroading. I understand from what I have read that these shocks will provide a firmer ride. How much firmer than stock? Is this a good deal?

They will be somewhat more firm than OEM shocks, but to the point of being harsh. In my experience, they will seem harsh on small bumps until you put a few hundred miles on them. $260 is about what I paid also.

I agree. I installed my HD's about 2 weeks ago, and I paid ~260 bucks. It is a firmer ride...but these shocks handle bumps so much better than my old ones.

Same as above. Bilstein is tough to beat and the warranty is great too!

So, it sounds like they should firm up the ride and do really well for highway driving. The primary concern I have is will I feel every bump on the road or will they be smoothed out? How do the Bilstein 5100s compare to the Bilstein HDs?

installed the Billstein HD's on my truck about a month ago, and for all the hype...I honostly couldn't tell you the difference from my stock shocks (90,000 miles on them) and the new HD's. Maybe it's just me or just my truck, but I really honostly couldn't feel a great difference. they do add a nice splash of yellow to the undercarriage though! lol. I'm sure they're a great shock and the quality is top notch, but in my experience it didn't change much.

i have the 5100's on my truck after i leveled my truck the suspension seemed to bottom out more? not sure if thats the correct term there but thats why i described it as and its gone with these new shocks....granted there two inches longer so im sure thats why however in my experience the shocks do stiffen the ride but its not bad at all...definatley a great purchase!

Do your homework. Pretty sure that the 5100's and the HD's are not interchangeable. The 5100's are for lifted trucks, I believe. HD's will fit stock ride height.

Everything I've found says the 5100s are for lifted trucks only.Leveling your truck by cranking the torsion keys doesn't count as lifted.

That is what I thought as well...just wanted to make sure. Looks like I will be going with the HD's. Thanks for all the feedback.

Well, I made the purchase about a week ago from shockwarehouse.com. Shocks arrived 4 business days after order was placed. I installed them 3 days ago and so far I am very pleased with the purchase. They definitely smooth out the ride. The stock shocks were completely worn out. Almost feels like driving a new truck now! Installation was not too bad...took just over 2hrs to do by myself. Thanks for the feedback.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
