Chains

Hey All,

First post to the forum... just bought a used (fleet) 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 4X4 Z71, stock tires. Getting a good all terrain to take care of my fall/winter needs (Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armours, steel rims), and I was wondering about Chains? I am not tallking cable chains, I am talking about a real set for offroad snow and extreme mud.

Stock tire is 265/70/R17, right? Will this take a set of chains up front, without a torsion bar hike? How about with? I could probably go 1" without a ride quality compomise, I hear.

Thanks for any input.

... good to hear about someone else thinking about tire chains... I have always had a set of chains in my truck/car since I started to drive over the past 40 years... lately I have not had to use them ... but when you do find yourself in deep snow, snow/mud, and trying to travel in some hilly terrain ... well, you're never sorry for packing them around when you need them.

... when I tell most people that I have a set of chains for my truck, they think I am nuts!

.. I bought a new set last year as I needed a size bigger than I had before... they are still shiny new and I may never use them..... but it is another level of confidence having them waiting, nice and clean sitting in a pail in the back of the truck.

If your new truck is a GMT900 (latest body style), chains in the front will probably run into interference when the wheels are turned.

I think the rear tires have plenty of clearance, but you should check of course.

My truck is the last of the GMT800s 2007 Silverado Classic... Looks like chains might fit with stock tires, on the back for sure, but it is very close on the front.

I have V-Bar chains from my previous truck that I was thinking on upsizing to fit the new truck. Still don't know if there is enough clearance, and was looking for experience with the GMT800 and chains. Thanks again!
