Transfer Case, 460le Or 480le?

I have a 2004 GMC Sierra SLE extended cab 4x4. The transfer case is shot in it.

Is there a simple way for me to tell of it's a 460 LE or a 480LE transfer case? I've called around pricing out a new transfer case and GM is $2100 more than the all the rest.

Your transmission is a 4L60e trans... a 2500 has a 4L80e HD trans... You'll have better luck finding one on ebay or a salvage yard for a MUCH better price.

 

2500 will have a NP247 transfer case

1500 will have a NP246 transfer case.

auto 4x4 is a NV246

manual shift 4x4 is a NV261

electric shift part time 4x4 is a NV263

 

a 1500 truck would be a NV246 or a NV261LD

a 2500 truck would be a NV261HD or NV263HD

a 3500 truck would be a NV261SHD or NV263SHD

 

Try to match the transfer case based on the part number on the round metal NPG tag on the back or the transfer case. It may be hard to read since the steel tags corrode really bad on the mag cases.

 

fyi the NV247 goes in Jeep Grand Cherokee 99-04 (WJ)
