Front Hub Assembly R&r On 06 Sierra 4x4

:dunno: Please help with this problem. This weekend we will be r&r the right front hub assy. on my son's 2006 gmc sierra slt z71 1500 4x4. Also what replacement hub is the better choice.

Gm hub....

 

Take the wheel off.

 

Take the caliper and rotor off.

 

Disconnect the wheel speed sensor.

 

Unbolt the hub from the rear.

 

Get out the big F&*$*ing hammer and some explosives to remove the hub.

 

Installation is the reverse without the hammer and explosives.

I just finished mine this morning. I went with the cheapy at Kragen. $185 out the door for the HD. Not hard to do at all. I had a few frozen bolts I had to soak down over night and they popped right off this morning. Part came with a 1 year warranty. The more expensive was $236 before tax. I found one of the cheap ones on E-BAY for $108 with free shipping. But, who knows the actual time it will take to get to you. Again, this is for the HD, yours may be cheaper.

I see by your signature you live in the desert, that would be the reason it wasn't that bad. If you lived in a cold climate or near the ocean those things get pretty stubborn.

I took the impact gun to the 4 hub bolts and the 2 bolts for the cage and they would not budge. I began rocking them and broke my extension off. After soaking them overnight, they spun right off. If that did'nt happen, I was going to take a torch to the surrounding metal. That usually works. I got lucky. The hub came off pretty easy. I have over 173,000 miles and I thought it would be alot worse. Worked out great! No explosives! Well, you might count the socket that blew apart...

:lol: Thanks to all who tried to help with this. We already did the R&R and it was quite simple. The sad part of all this is that the truck only had 53,000 miles on it. Was just bought at Borcherding GMC 2 weeks ago they told my son it wasn't drivetrain and they were not responsible for R&R.

Isn't drivetrain anything involved with spinning the wheels...I could see if it were a 2WD as nothing is hooked to the front...but on a 4WD..Come on.

Yup, took me 2 days to get the damn thing out of mine. Ended up using a chisel, and an 8lb sledge. :lol:

 

I have heard, that if you pull the CV axle out, you can get behind it and hit it out easier (I guess since you'd be smacking the center, it won't go all lopsided and get stuck). :lol:

Yeah I would've thought the same but it's just another way for them to get out of paying. I would still like to know how tight to torque the axle shaft nut on the hub assy.

You tighten it till you feel some resistance when spinning the wheel. I do it by feel for the most part...but usually you snug the nut up to the bearing with your fingers and give it 1/4 with the socket. You should feel some resistance on the wheel. And it should be able to complete a full rotation with moderate pressure applied to make it spin.

You tighten it till you feel some resistance when spinning the wheel. The torque for that nut is 177 Lbft.

 

As for the drive train warranty you got hosed. It's possible that the dealer is misunderstanding the new powertrain warranty. The 2010 powertrain warranty excludes wheel bearings so that is the new info that we have. BUT that does not apply to an 06, the bearings are covered on that.

please please don't ever take a torch to anything resembling a steering component ,it is frowned upon and compromises the metal,

 

be safe and use other methods as you found ,you have to share the road ,ty

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver. 
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....  
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps. 
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.  
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
