I have heard that some guys do this, but wondered how common it is as I have not seen any around my part of the US. Anyone use a 2wd for plowing?

A lot of guys do it. Although they usually do it with a 1 ton truck so that they can throw 1,200+ pounds in the back. Just be easy one the gas. It can be done with some skill.

I do it in 2wd when I am loaded with alot of salt in the bed. Keep enough weight in the bed, it can be done. In light powdery snow I can plow with no problems in 2wd. When i have over 2000lbs in the bed, i really don't need to use 4wd cause of all the weight and great ballast.

In order to successfully be able to drive in 2wd in a pick up truck, you first need an aggressive set of tires, like BFG AT's, MT's. Then load up your bed with 1500lbs or more. You'll then be able to accelerate at a green light wuth snow on the ground, without slipping easily.

I remember carrying a palet of rock salt which weighs 2550 lbs during a snow storm, and the roads had a good 2-3" on it and I didn't spin out at all, even go up steep hills. I try to plow as much as possible without using 4wd so that I do not premature wear down my PS tire from using 4wd all the time. But when it comes to stacking, you really need the 4wd engaged if you want to push all that snow back and away from the driveways or lots.
