07 Max 6.0 Vs 2009/10 Max 6.2

I have a 2007 GMC SLT CC Z71 Vmax 6.0 with 4.10's. I think it has a max tow rating of 10,300. I have been real happy with the towing capabilities winter and summer.

I'm looking at a 09 SLT CC 6.2 6 spd All Terrain with 3.42's, and trying to find the specs on a 2010 Max trailing (NHT?) with similiar options. If I wait till 2010 I most likely would go with the Ext cab vs CC.

Overall if I trade up it looks like I would be giving up some of my current 07's towing capabilities with the 09 or 10? Not sure and looking for input. It would be an easier decision to trade if I didn't like my 07 so well...

Thanks.

If you like your 07 so much and it suits your towing needs, why would you trade?

A 2010 "NHT" ext.cab is rated for 10,700 for a 2wd,and 10,400 for a 4wd.

Also, the NHT package will come with 3.73 gearing.

And the 6-speed which will give more down low. But with that said, a well tuned Vmax 4-speed I'd bet would match the 6.2 pretty well. And save you a bunch of money. :rollin:

You don't say what transmission in your '07... if it is a 4-sp then your biggest difference between these trucks will be the function of the 6-sp transmission....

I hear that people are saying no need for the 4.10 rear axle with the 6-sp as the transmission has a lower low gear... and I believe it has a slightly higher high gear

I really can't imagine anyone not liking the 6.2/6L80/3.73 (NHT) combo for towing, but it's going to be on par with what you already have. More importantly, the "non-NHT" truck will not have the 9.5 axle and higher payload.

Or the 3.73's gears. I compared a 2500 with my truck and the final drive RPM is almost the same as mine and very well could be the same going down the road. When your towing at highway speeds, there shouldn't be any difference. It comes down to the HP/TQ of the motor which the 6.2 has 417tq stock. The other BIG difference between the 6.0 and the 6.2 is the power curve.

I think the 6.2 6-speed and NHT package would be a great towing machine. :rollin:

I've owned both, and the 6.2/6sp/3:42 does the job of towing my 8K trailer much better than the 6.0/4sp/4:10. What does much better mean? To me, it means maintaining at least 60mph on the worst hills I encounter in NY/PA. The 6.0 did not, mostly because of the 4sp vs. 6sp issue. I would have the 6.0/4sp at redline many times and it would still not cut it, still lose speed on big climbs, all the way to 40mph+/-. Granted, this did not happen a lot. However, I also had a 8.1/4sp/4:10 that did not have this problem, and when I went to get a new truck, the 8.1 was gone, and the 6.2 was the best they had, so I got one and it suprised me that it worked pretty well compared to the 8.1.

I'd like to hear a little more about your trailer. Is that 8k fully loaded? I ask, because I'm pulling 7k w/ a 5.3/4-spd/3.73 and have been thinking on this in the back of mind quite a bit (gearing, power, etc.). I pulled it over Jellico mountain between TN and KY, which is the worse climb around here (4% to 5% for a long time). I pulled it in 2nd @ 55 mph with throttle to spare... actually, I could accelerate slowly if I wanted. I certainly didn't have any more trouble than the semis...

Hearing your experience, I'm curious about your setup and those hills your pulling (grade, altitude, etc.), especially since I'm hoping to head west in the next year or two for a long vacation.

I really think a 6 speed trans will make for a very good improvement. Any of you that have towed know what I mean. Going up any grades, the 4 speed trans is either making your engine race or bogging down. Closer gears will help a lot, no matter what engine you get.

But, if that were my trailer and I was looking at buying another truck, I'd just buy a 2500, probably a Duramax.

I also had a 2500 with a duramax in 03, and feel this does a pretty close job for the 8K or less I pull on occassion. My truck also is a daily driver so I feel I now have the best of both worlds by having a 1500 that pulls and stops pretty close to a 2500, but yet is decent for long trips or daily driving unloaded...

My only issue is I trade every 2 to 3 years to not end up with such a big trade difference (and I like new cars), so when looking at the choices for left over 09's or 10's, I'm having a hard time deciding. I even thought this morning about keeping the truck till paid off next year, park it and only use it for towing, snow, etc, and then buying a Camaro....

That's a plan! :rollin:
