Noisy Fuel Pump

I have a 2000 Silverado 1500 4x4. When I turn the key on the fuel pump sounds normal (quiet) but when I start the engine it has a loud buzz. Is this a vibration problem or is the pump maybe loose in the tank? 10k miles on the pump but the noise only started recently. I changed the filter and added top end lube to the fuel but it's still noisy. Anyone seen this before? Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks for the link. Was very interesting. One thing had me scratching my head. The expert said atf doesn't lube. There are plenty of bearings and gears in an auto tranny that would wear out in no time if atf didn't lube.

Trans Fluid Certainly does lubricate. But it also contains friction modifiers to allow the clutches to engage, and it also contains a butt load of detergents. If you add a quart to your engine oil, and run your engine at idle for 15-20 min before a change you will clean out deposits in no time...I have been doing this for quite a while now.

If it didn't lubricate...why the hell would it go into some manual transmissions...like the T56, for example, and in most transfer cases. Some f'n Expert

.... to answer your original question

.... honestly, some people think that a noisy/buzzing fuel pump is no problem

.... personally, I do not like to hear anything mechanical making unnecessary noise as to me it implies that something is going to be wearing out sooner than it should.

.... my new fuel pump this spring made noise from day 1, and my mechanic replaced it on warranty after two weeks when it still did not quiet down

when I had a truck on my hoist with a noisey pump ,I upsold it with no questions asked ,flip it bud.

oh and tranny fluid is a hydraulic oil and goes thru every tranny bushing /bearing ,I think its called the lube circuit ,the expert isn't

I don't want to flip it over a fuel pump. I wanna see how far this 5.3 will go. But the piston slap pisses me off. Newer tranny, rebuilt diffs, all new u-joints and wheel bearings, no hole in the TC yet and the front end is still tight. Hoping for 300k kilometers. 100k more to go. If I get through the winter I think I'll rebuild the TC next summer. Already bought a GM manual. I do all the maintenance and repairs myself so I figure it's still way cheaper than $800 payments on a new truck. Plus when I rebuild the engine it sure won't have that damn piston slap.
