1997 Speedometer Problem

Have a 1997 1500 4.3l with a speedometer problem. Driving along speedometer started jumping erratic, tach also, speedometer went hard right. Shut truck off , restarted tach ok but speedometer stayed right. Any suggestions on what to check would be appricated. New to this fourm. thanks Brian

Definately take a look at your vehicle speed sensor. It should be located somewhere near the rear of your transmission. I wish I could be more help. If you can get a hold of a haynes or chiltons manual, it'll give a discription of it and where it is.

First off, welcome aboard.

 

Secondly, ditto on the speed sensor. After that, you need to start checking your grounds under the hood, that was my cause on my 92. I took mine to a speedometer shop thinking it was the head unit. Turns out they found the faulty ground up front near the battery. Saved me $900 as opposed to dropping it off at the dealership....
