Upgrading Front Speakers

I am planning on Upgrading my front speakers on my 01 Sierra and was wondering if the factory components have a crossover?

I am upgrading with inifiniti kappas with a crossover.

Any info is appreciated.

my 95 didn't have crossovers, so i highly doubt it would have crossovers.

No, the front speakers do not have crossovers from the factory.

Since I have to add a crossover, where is the best place to mount it. Is there a place in the door? Also do I have to remove the door panel to change the speakers? If so does anyone know how to remove them?

This is the first GM truck I have ever owned so I am not very familiar with it. All information is appreciated!

have to remove the door panel to change the speaker. i have my crossovers at the bottom of the door.

How does GM get away with feeding the front components if there isn't a crossover?

Im no Audio Tech guy, but i do believe there is a small cross over type thing on the tweeter.

I cannot confirm this, but i do believe that thing filters out all low frequencies.

If you remove the kick panel on the left by your drivers left foot, there is a conection(plug) that has many wires, among them, the wires that come from the stereo and then splits off into two wires; one feeding the woofer and one the tweet.

You can use those same wires if you wish when replacing your speakers.

All you have to do is cut the two wires on the speaker side of the connection.

Cut the wires on the radio side to connect to the input portion of the crossover and use the two that went to the factory speakers for the new tweet and woofer.

I mounted my cross over onto the fuse box with velcro.

I wouldnt place my crossover in the door.

You do have to remove the door panel but it is really really easy. I did not see a separate crossover but the tweet might have one. If you can avoid it, do not install the crossovers in the door because of the moister that gets in the door, it will cause corrosion.

Very good point.

Also, did you get some sort of install kit for the component speakers?

Being the cheapy that i am, i didnt and had to fab up a place for the new tweets.

I had to actually cut out the factory tweets to the size of the new tweets. It actually worked out really well and looks factory , but you need one of them circle drill bits.

For the front doors, I traced the factory tweeter bracket onto a piece of 3/8" wood and cut it out. I used a hole-saw to drill the hole for the tweeter, and drilled two pilot holes in the same place as the factory tweeter, and mounted two machine screws there.

I painted the wood & screws black, mounted the tweeters in them, and you can't tell the difference from stock. They mount in the factory location, and sound great.

The nice part about the wood, is that it is acting as a spacer, since the Infinity tweeters have a long mount on them, and this way there is no clearance issue. There is still plenty of space between the tweeter and the grill, too.

Oh, I mounted the crossover right on the back of the door panel. After looking at door & frame work, I determined a safe area, & cut a piece of the felt from the backside of the door panel, the exact size of the crossover. I then epoxied the crossover right to the door. This keeps the crossover on the protected side of the poly door shield, away from the elements.

There is a small capacitor that acts as a low frequency filter on the tweeter itself. If you remove the tweeter at the factory disconnect (2" from the tweeter), you have removed the passive "crossover"
