Brake Light Issues

my mother has a 98 Tahoe. The brake lights went out one at a time and i replaced them and the board that the bulbs plug in. Well now , a year later, she has no brake lights period. It done this before a few months ago and we bought a brake switch and took it to one of the local guys here to get his opinion. When we got there the brake lights were working so he didnt get to see it. Well we still have the switch somewhere. Any idea what this could be. Why would it work sometimes and then others it wouldnt. She hasnt had any brake lights for a month or 2 now.

Any suggestions on a fix.

I have been having problems with the tail lights in my 2004 2500HD. The cab mounted 3rd light would work, but the two in the bed would not. Turned out to be in the junction block just in front of the rear bumper, where 4 harnesses are pluged in. When I would move the connector coming from the cab, the light would go on and off. Took a zip tie and pulled the connector toward the middle and it is working so far. In my case the terminal block is replaceable, which I might do yet. Part#15304995. Don't know if these would be the same, but maybe that helps.

bump this up to the top.......

I replaced the brake light switch and the brakes still do not work. Not even the 3rd brake light. I checked all fuses and they are all fine. Im gonna use a test light saturday to check a few areas to see if im getting power. We are supposed to be getting some rain friday.

Any other ideas on this issue. I saw where someone tried extending the trailer harness. All of the connectors seem to be fine there also.

Any suggestions?

WOW. over 66,000 members and im the only one that has ever had this issue?

Surely someone had had to deal with something like this in the shop or on their personal vehicle.

No you are probably not but you are most likely the only one that has a switch and didn't install it. If you are going to guess (which is what most come here to do) then throw the switch in it and see what happens. If the lights never work and you have a test light let us know and we can tell you what to check.

Sorry, my bad I had a bad day yesterday. Check for power at the switch on the Orange wire and power out of the switch when activated on the White wire. Tell me what you find there and I'll tell you which way to go.

I checked the orange wire and there was power on it. I could not access the white wire after 30 minutes of fighting with it. it would be easy to check it if i could remove the switch itself like i did to check the orange but the brake has to be pressed in to see if im getting power to the white one right. I dont understand how anyone in this world could access the white wire under there. GM should be ashamed of themselves for putting all that junk under there so no one could get to it. its not even like i can unbolt something to make it easier to get to. All of that stuff is welded together.

Sorry I'm so slow getting back, computer issues. I had to hack togeather my laptop cord just to get on today, have to find an end in the next few days.

Anyway, From your pm you sent so we can keep all relevent stuff all in one place.

I tried jumping from the orange to the white to see if the lights came on and still nothing. I checked my trailer harness and the brown one is hot. any ideas

I was leaning to the multifunction switch but you should still have the center high mount brake light if that was the only problem. Can you pull all the brake lamp bulbs and use a test light to check for power and ground at them with the switch activated? I have a feeling you are going to find more then one issue here unless it is....no you should find more then one issue since you checked the trailer harness and it has power.

Pull the bulbs and check for power and see what you get. I am pretty sure you are going to end up with a blown center high mount bulb and a multifunction switch needed for the other 2 but a little bit of testing will save you some parts money in case I am wrong.

If I don't post tomorrow I'm out searching for a cable end. @#%@#$@# 3 frickin power supplies here and all 3 have bad ends that went poof in the last 2 weeks :loser: I can't patch togeather one doable one out of the bunch. Wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't live an hour away from anything resembling an electronics store.

thanks for the reply. I thought about that last night about the top light being blown and the other ones out as a result of the multiswitch. Im gonna play with is some today and see what i can come up with. I will post back later today.

Looks like the upper 3rd light has a bunch of LEDs instead of a single bulb set up. I took the two screws out but had no luck removing the light or cover.

I talked to a local mechanic that specializes in these type trucks and SUVs and he is saying its the multi-switch also.

Ive got one ordered for 109.00 shipped. Im gonna see how this goes. He said something about the whole steering wheel had to be removed to replace it because of a screw that it holding it in there.

Any tips on an easy removal of the steering wheel.

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
