I have an 04 Sierra base model.

I'm looking to put a remote starter in it.

Do I need a by-pass part to trick the truck to thinking a key is in it?

Power Locks.

I called a dealership & they said with a base model & that year it does not have a chip.

.. does that mean there is no PassLock chip at all... or does it mean the key cylinder has the old PassLock system...??

there is still a passlock system in all gm vehicles, you must get a bypass kit to bypass the passlock system, what the bypass kit does it temporarily bypass the oem passlock system allowing the vehicle to start via remote. i just put one in my 06 gmc sierra base model truck that has windows and locks. the difference between what kind of bypass kit you want to get depends on the options you want and if your going to be unlocking and locking the doors with the new aftermarket system or not, you will not need to leave a key in the ignition, i went with XK01 bypass kit from DEI, the best prices i could find were on ebay for 25 shipped, the best part about the xk01 is that its upgradeable if you want more options in the future and theres alot less splicing of wires to the truck because everything runs through the data line in pin 2 (violet wire) of the OBDII connector under the drivers side dash board.

So how does the bypass & remote started connect to each other?

basically yes the remote start controller wires splice to the wires from the bypass module, power and ground can be shared, purple wire from the bypass splices into pin 2 of OBDII connector under driver side dash, no need to even connect siren or light outputs from the aftermarket remote start controller because with the xk01 bypass it will control the lights and horn like an oem gm keyless would which is why the bypass kit saves you time on installation. if you go to that link i posted you can look up the wiring diagram for xk01 bypass to aftermarket remote start/alarm. i think your going to want to look under the amdl firmware if i remember correctly.

This does not state that it is for remote starter bypass?
