Service 4wd?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys we had a huge snow storm last night out here in calgary. I was using my 4x4 all night, switching from auto 4x4 to 4x4high, then near the end of the night the "Service 4wd" came on the dash, and the 4x4 was out for about 10 min then went back in and started working. Does anyone know what could be going on? Or should I just bring it in to the dealership? It is a 2007 and still has powertrain warranty till 160,000kms.

Im in Calgary too, the storm was harsh. My Vw handles better in the snow than my truck right now.

I have no 4wd and the lights are out on my switch.

trying the soldering method first, then resorting to a new switch if it doesnt work.

Good luck with yours.

I would take it in and explain it to the service department. It might have been a glitch but if you take it in then it will be in their system that you had issues with it if it happens again down the road.

After 35 years in Calgary I'm now in Airdrie. 5 foot high snowdrifts in my backyard. Never had my street plowed once in Calgary, the City of Airdrie has plowed my street about 6 times since this storm started. Just a residential street, not even a bus route.

If the 2007 truck is a GMT 800, it most likely is the push button switch. Had to replace mine twice on my 2000. Dealers keep about 20 in stock because they fail so often. Takes 10 minutes to replace without tools.

Ok so this seems like an easy fix that I can do on my own. What is the part number for the switch does anyone know? And if anyone has done this, what exactly do I have to do? Does this switch just unplug or something?

Disconnect the battery, tilt the steering wheel down, carefully pull the bezel that surrounds the gauges and radio etc off, press in the tabs that hold the switch in, pull the switch out a little and unplug the harness. Takes no time at all. Your dealer probably has the part number memorized.

I took the switch out, opened it up and checked it out. There was 2 bulbs on the right side of it, and the one on the bottom looked burned out or something. I cleaned it up a bit and plugged it back into the truck. The 4wd is working now but I'm assuming the problem will occur again, so maybe it will be a good idea to order a new switch anyway.

I did the same thing but then had the switch go out on my 2001(35K miles) several years ago. It was replaced under warranty at the time('03) - the part number for mine was 15709327
