Brake/hazard/turn Problem

Recommended Posts

Posted

Currently my brake lights do not work, nor do my hazards. My turn signals DO work however...but when I press the brake at the same time as the turn signal, it blows the turn signal fuse. So even though the brake lights don't work, obviously something is happening when I press the pedal to trip the turn. Now my hazards do not work whatsoever, but when my turn signal is on, and then I turn on my hazards, the turn signals stop as if interrupted (is this mechanical?).

I've checked obvious fuses and I checked the flasher for the TURN SIGNALS.

Currently I'm living at college and I'm very busy so it's hard to find time to run home and work on my car. Also I'm taking a trip in a few weeks so I'd like to have these working. On top of that I don't have an actual garage at home and it's about 20 degree's outside so any help narrowing this down would be great so I don't have to spend AS much time troubleshooting!

Thanks a bunch!

You have a blown hazard relay. That's where the brake lights tie into the flasher system, your putting double the amperage to the lights when you have a turn signal on and try and brake too. Change out the hazard relay...or if you don't have one...it may all be controlled by the flasher relay, so you may have to change that one. There is a contact stuck on one of them.

Ok so I replaced the hazard relay, turn signal fuse, and stop fuse, and I thought I stopped the problem, but about 5 minutes into my drive home from the parts store, the brake light fuse popped and then the signal fuse popped. Any other suggestions?

I know this is a complete shot in the dark, but it's about 28 degrees here now and very dry, every time I touch something i shock myself, is there any chance that my car is carrying a charge as it drives?

Other info: I took my dash apart just over a week ago, but the problem didn't arise until last night. I got my car washed yesterday afternoon, but again the problem didn't arise til night time.

Thanks

Water in your bulb sockets....

Pop the neg terminal off the battery first, your gonna be putting your fingers in the sockets. Pull the tails and front indicators appart, ie take the bulbs out and the pigtails that hold the bulbs. Wipe all the pigtails out with a cloth...shop towel...whatever...get contact cleaner and spray them out, I mean soak them really give them a good spray, don't get any of the contact cleaner on your paint BTW. Now wipe them out again with some clean towel/rag...whatever...than give the bulbs a coat of dielectric grease on the metal part. Spray the outside and wires of the pigtail with WD-40 to get out any water that may not have been pushed out with the contact cleaner, and reassemble the lights.

If this doesn't fix things..you may have pinched a wire when putting the dash back together.

Hey one more thing, are you certain that it would be moisture in the sockets if my park lights still work? theyre double filament bulbs.

Thanks

Never can be sure...but its the most likely place to start...That's where I would start if I were troubleshoting it.

turns out it was the tail light housings. the bulb sockets were burned and melted. Not sure if it was causing the problem or if it was caused by the problem, but I went ahead and replaced them. They were cheap aftermarket lights that came with my car so I replaced them with some factory tail lights for a wrecking yard, for now I'm blaming the problem on low quality materials from the company that made the aftermarket lights.

Probably a safe bet man....I don't like those aftermarket tails at all.
