I was wondering who has had a tire come off running 305 70 16's on the factory wheels?

Who has ran them and NOT had a problem.

My cousins stepbrothers girlfriends uncles sister-in-laws second cousin twice removed had a bronco with 12.5" wide tires come off an oem 7" wide wheel when going around a turn.

I ran 305 70 16s on the factory 2002 Z71 wheels. Put almost 100k miles on the truck and never had any problems.

No way the tires wore evenly though.. the tires had 2 wear down the middle. Im sure it can be done but you prolly had to run 20 psi to ge them 2 sit flat

The tires wore down evenly, ran about 38 pounds in each tire. Got over 60k miles on my first set of 305s. And know many many more people that also ran 305s without any problems. In my experience it can be done, and the tires wore evenly.

hmm i sorry man i just would have to believe it to see it.. No offense but i have my experiences with 305s on a 8.5" wheel and thats what im going off of. Generally if you try to run a 305 on a 7" wheel it will wear the middles..Its just how it works because of the contact patch.

Anyone else did it wana chime in?

I think there's also a little bit of confusion with the origination of this thread. Sure, 7" wide wheels are not ideal for 305 wide tires... but it's just at the tip of the recommended wheel width for the tires.

The bigger issue is people running 315 wide (or 12.5") tires on stock wheels. That's more than an inch beyond the minimum limit for the tires and is not recommended.

In the end, I would check the tire manufacturers spec range. The minimum wheel width for 305mm tires tends to be between 7.5 and 8.5" depending on manufacturer, tire model and tire size. And the minimum width for 315s is usually 8.0 to 9.0" depending on the same factors. (edit- i haven't seen the ranges for ALL tires... this is just a general observation of the minimums ive come across)

So to say that all 305s will wear bad on 7" wide wheels isn't true. If that particular tire has a minimum wheel width of 7.5... i don't see a 7" wide wheel being a huge issue. However if that tire needs the 8.5" minimum, then you may have wear issues. And if you have a 315 wide tire that the manufacturer recommends 9" minimum, then yes the 7" wheel is just dumb IMO

i ran 305-70 R16 pro-comp all terrains on a 2002 gmc step-side with z71 oem Aluminum rims. they were fine, only lasted 40 000 clicks but it wasnt the tires fault. lol. kinda burn tires off real fast on everything i drive. cant tell you how they wore in the rear cuz it was really fast ahaaha. but in the front they were fine. wore evenly. never had an issue...i dont understand why people would say that they would wear faster in the middle. just because you have a smaller rim doesnt mean its gonna wear excessively down the middle of the tire. non-sense lol. they are only a 12.5 wide tire or soemthing jesus they arrent friggin 15 inches wide. they are like a 32x12.5 or soemthing correct me if im wrong. so if you put those tires on you need 9 inch wide rims, 6 inch suspension lift, 4:88 gears, supercharger just to spin them things :D . christ i run 44x18.5 boggers on 10 inch wide 15 inch rims. they will be fine man...phew

the reason you wear down the middle with a wide tire on a small rim is the pucker-factor. because you have to suck the bead in so far to the rim, it puckers out the side wall and makes your tires look like balloons. consequently the shoulder of the tires tread is pulled down, which leaves the center of the tire to contact the road surface while the shoulders don't.

as to the original posters question, I have no experience with 305's but I know many people have gotten by with 285's just fine. most tire manufacturers will reccomend at least an 8" rim to run 305's, while 285's will reccomend a 7.5" rim. you could probably do it, but if it were me...I wouldn't.

just my $.02

I stopped by my brother-in-laws work today and his buddy has a 6 inch suspension with 35 inch tires on stock 16s. He said that he had to buy some kind of extension to keep his tires from touching his ball joints and whatever else.

This whole topoic is based on experiance, not "what you think'"

Its to get real experiances what People have actually done, not what they read somewhere about something.
