Ignition Wire Harness Help

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,I'm installing a remote start(I understand the risk involved) but my main question is about the ignition wiring harness. I understand your suppose to take the steering column cover off and see it right there, but considering there's a ton of different wiring harnesses I see and the risk involved I like alittle more info... Like how many pins with the connector have, which side of the steering wheel will it actually it actually be on, etc.

Also since my truck it automatic, do I need to tap into the tach? And if so I've heard of people hoovking upto the alternator.... Not totally sure on that yet.

Also any tips would help of course, but also where is the oem remote module be located?

I'm using a system that incorporates the factory key fobs so that I hit the lock or unlock button on my factory remote a certain amount of times and then it'll start. So I'll need to tap into the lock or unlock of the remote module... Or straight to the lock/unlock of the doors them

self. Thanks for any help guys. I plan on doing this tomorrow, so any help would be appreciated.

What is the manufacturer of the remote start? I never saw one that you used the factory remote (without a seperate button) to activate the remote start.

All the wires you need should be behind the driverside underdash which would be easier to remove than the bottom of the steering column. I have access to a database of which lists the wire colors of each automaker but I cannot get that till I go into work tonight. I will pull it up for your vehicle and post if I can tonight. It is from Directechs which is from Directed Electronics, the information is pretty accurate but you would still need to test the wires with a multimeter.

Let me know if this would help if not I will not bother getting it...

Also, my understanding of the tach wire is so that the remote start gets confirmation that the engine is running and to go through the start sequence again. If you do not have a lot of problems with the vehicle not starting on the first try you can bypass that step by setting up the virtual tach which many remote starts have built into them. Sometimes the tach set ups cause more problems than they help...

We were working on a 06 Pontiac G6 about a week ago and for some reason the tach was not communicating correctly with the remote start module. The remote start would fire the engine, and after it was running you could hear the module clicking like it was going through the start up process again. It would do this three times (while the engine was running) then it would shut the entire system down.

Once we set the system to virtual tach everything worked fine. We couldn't explain it....
