Transfercase Noise? Tis The Season

So it was getting pretty dicey around here this last nite so I thought I would drop it into 4wd for good measure.. however I noticed that at 35mph it makes kind of a rattle noise.. I can't feel anything in the shifter (manual floor shift) but it kind of makes me concerned... The truck only has 39K miles, so it shouldnt be a bearing or anything right?? is this normal even?

Could be the chain.

Could be low on fluid...have you ever changed it?? Just cause it only has 39K on it....its still a 12 year old truck. And if it has 39K on it...the P/O probably didn't pop it in 4wd much. Or you dont if you bought it new. It needs to be brought to a dirt/gravel road at least once a month and put in 4wd to keep everything moving.

Yea I bought it from the orig owner, and I highly doubt he put it in 4wd much, I have been putting it in 4wd ever so offten, but this is the first time i heard it make noise, altho this is also the first time i drove it over a mile with it engauged also,, but no I haven't changed the fluid in it, I suppose it is prob time. Thanx guys! i really appreciate it, I hate for something to happen to my ol'girl

Yeah I would take a trans specialist for a ride in it personally. Just to see what they think about it. A fluid change, and more use also helps....just not on dry pavement...not even wet pavement really, its best to drive it on a gravel road in 4WD, or on ice/snow
