2003 Silverado 1500hd Trailer Hitch Question

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 2003 Silverado 1500HD 4x4. The truck didn't come with a factory trailer hitch.

I am wanting to get a factory trailer hitch with trailer plug. My local junk yard has a trailer hitch

off a wrecked 03 Silverado 1500 but I am not sure it will fit. What model Silverado's factory trailer hitch

fit my 03 Silverado 1500HD? Basically I need to know if a trailer hitch off a Silverado 1500 fit my 1500HD OR

will a trailer hitch off a Silverado 2500 fit my 1500HD? The junk yard didn't know and didn't have anyway to

run a cross reference.

Thanks guys.

1500 and 1500hd and 2500 have same frame. 1500 is just thinner metal

2500hd and 3500hd are different frames.

So for your 1500hd you can use a hitch from a 1500 or 2500, but not 2500hd or 3500hd

1500hd and 2500 is the same thing just different name depending on model year.

Yeah I found out the easy way what fits what. A 1500 hitch will fit a 2500HD frames but 2500HD hitchs will not fit 1500 frames as it will hit the bumper. 2500HD frames are larger from top to bottom. When you mount a 1500 hitch to an 2500HD frame, it will mount to the frame but not the bumper but you can make something to take up the gap and use a longer bolt, kinda like when you do a body lift on a vehicle on these year trucks.

Heres the real question, how much does a junk yard want for that factory hitch. When I called around here, they wanted around $150 + for it. I called around for a new Reese, Drawtite etc hitches.. and they cost the same but are better built and could carry/tow more weight without weight distribution. My HD didnt come with a hitch but I found a factory one for $80 with all bolts & a 3 ball connection. Thats the only reason I bought this one or I was gonna get the best Reese made. Also I found it on Craiglist. I would look there first and the surrounding areas before I get it from a junk yard if its too expensive.

Thanks for the reply.

I bought a hitch today at a local junk yard for $50. It came with the bolts and the trailer plug and plenty of wire.

It came off a 2003 Silverado 1500. I am putting it on tomorrow, I will let you know if it fits.

Thanks,

$50 is a good deal there. You shouldnt need any wire as your factory body harness should plug into it. Thats how mine was and im sure yours is. It was hidden up in the frame by the bumper.

The hitch fit Perfect. Bolted right on in about 20 minutes.

And the trailer wire plug was attached to the harness just like Black Death said. Plugged right in.
