UN provoked my '96 has a? Chipped gear noise when moving in 1st not 2nd, 3rd but in 4th and reverse! Still there in 4H and 4L, it’s not from the drive shaft or rear-end also whisper quite in neutral even rolling revving the engine. It kind of winds’ up in first then stops in second but does return in fourth you can feel it in the seat sounds expensive and is disappointing at 100k. Any help would be appreciated.

This week end I had a transmission specialist take a ride in the truck ….. And he said “I can fix that … your first gear planetary is toast! “ I was quoted $1400 for a complete re- build if I remove it and bring it in ….. Is this price reasonable for a 4L60E? What I forgot to ask is, given that first isn’t usable... killing reverse and fourth, can I drive this thing in second and third until spring?? Any input would be a great help. :fume:

I'm no GM tech but. My old 95 K2500 at a stop light sounded like the rear, trans or drive train was about to fall out.

When starting out in drive it would grind for a few seconds, stop grinding and still went forward. If you pulled out real real slow, low thottle it would be normal up tp 55 mph. One shop guy said it needed a rebuilt trans and transfer case to fix at about $4500. He then offered to buy the truck cheap. Sold truck to friend "as is" cheap and his guy fixed the problem with a 90 cent spring clip in the transfer case that broke . He said it was a common problem with the design of the transfer case for a truck with 100K on it. All has been well for him the past 2 years.

Later I asked the dealership service guy where I bought the new truck about it and he said it happens alot with them and knew what it was right away. He said any good GM trans guy should know that. My fault I should have taken it to GM. Hope this helps.
