Smooth Out My Trucks Shifting?

Looking to smooth out the shifting in my truck, travel mostly at highway speeds and when I find myself coasting to slow down i.e. 25mph then accelerating again the shift is not seemless, there is a clunk and a noticeable shift. When I was a mechanic this wouldve been u-joints, however when I was a mechanic trucks didnt have the cadillac smoothness my 08' 1500 has.

Im tempted to add a bottle of lucas stop-slip trans additive to the trans. it is 1qt of what I would call STP for your tranny, its thick as maple syrup and works wonders for the turbo-400 transmissions I usually tinker with. Has anyone done this? does it help? should I not even think about it considering the sensitivity of todays modern transmissions. Works great dumped in an M-22 4-speed or a turbo 400.

I already brought it to chevy @40k and they changed the fluid for me, they swapped it via the trans cooler lines and ran it clean. definetly made it feel a little better but seeing as I drive in NJ. Where it is currently 15degrees F and hits 110 in the summer w/plenty of hills and traffic Id like to do everything I can for my truck.

The 4L60E is pretty bad for noticeable shifts..especially on the down shift and the 1-2/2-1. It is a very wide ratio trans.

Think it would be beneficial to add the lucas oil, its thick and feels good on traditional wide-ratio transmissions? any experience?

I have seen that study before...

I make it a point to not use that stuff, or any additives in the oil for that matter...unless its an LSD additive thats needed.

Now they're injector cleaner I do like...

Again man...I would recommend a tune...or at least pop it in tow haul mode when coasting down and hitting the gas again...it firms things up nicely.

What worked for me on my 2003 was Royal purple max ATF. Awesome stuff in the 4L60e trans. :uhoh: I even got a solid 1-2 mpg better after a full fluid swap.

Me too...but its not recommended for anything newer than 06. and the fluid in his trans is the new Dexron IV which is a synthetic fluid.

Oops, I missed the fact that its an 08... The Dexron IV is what you need. Maybe you need a custom tune to smooth things out some. Let Blackbear work their magic.

I have changed my truck and the wife's Buick over to Dexron V1 and I am impressed. Much better shifts. And I was using Mobil 1 trans fluid.

I guess its something I have to deal with, thanks for the info, the lucas oil study was really helpful, I never knew that, the study examines their oil stabilizer, the trans additive is different but if one doesnt work, the other is bound to be similar. Newer trans's arent my game, my experience is in GM muscle/corvette restoration, the vehicles have come a long way. Seems to me this problem is not uncommon, so I'll drop in and hope someone has a proven solution, i.e. electronic shift-point tuning, performance filtration or newer aftermarket synthetic fluid

Informative test, appreciate the response. have you ever used computerized tuning to alter the shift points w/any success?

LOL...shes the one that people order the tuning from...so yeah...I'd say they have had sucess

This may have nothing to do with tranny fluid but more so the programming of the truck....

Some trucks needed a re-flash to get rid of harsh shifting and stuff like that.

My 07 VMax has a different tranny but it shifted absolutely horrible, especially the 1-2 shift.

The Diablo Predator tuner did nothing for the problem, and I was getting really sick of the crappy shifting,to the point where I did not really want to own the truck anymore.

I did'nt want to go to the dealer to get a re-flash cause I'd already had the programmer hooked up and did not want to have any issues with warranty.

Finally I snapped and got a custom tune installed and could not be happier,it shifts awesome now and I just wish I had done it sooner....
