I was driving home in my 2006 GMC Sierra from my sled trip in the mountains with my dad and I was hauling my 28' trailer with 2 sleds in it. I was gaining speed(140km/h) to make it up a steep hill. Once I got over the huge hill I saw my engine light was on. When I got home i checked it out and it was a P0101, which in the book it says "MAF or VAF circuit range or performance" What could have caused this problem ? Why did this happen? Most of all... How can I fix this?

Thanks a gazillion

Im not sure exactally why or how to fix the problem, but My truck threw the same code while I was towing my jeep home and doing it in a hurry. I got home and checked mine to get the same code. i was told it was because my MAF was reading weird numbers while being under that kind of a load under that many rpms and could prob be fixed with a simple cleaning of the MAF. I cleaned mine really good and it hasn't came back since.

Yup generally a cleaning will fix that issue....also...how high up in the mountains are we talking...could have been altitude causing it..the air isn't as dense up there and light air would make the MAF go haywire.

ok... you pull a 30' trailer and try and make it up a vertical slope... You have to gain speed to go up the hill, so i was going down a hill to gain speed to go up so it doesnt shift into 2nd... easier on the tranny... = less problem and slowing down to 80km/h holding up traffic. I was in Saskatchewan which is almost sea level. never took the truck/trailer into the mountains. I erased the code last night and it hasn't come on.

I don't care Reese, its not responsible to go that speed, especially with a trailer ,you could kill yourself or others ,not cool Reese, not cool at all

for that you get a "fail"

haha alright old man... I guess you just don't know the conditions I was in, or my father who owns a multi million dollar trucking company was telling me what to do... Next time I'll let you pull my 30' toy trailer in your rusted out 1993 C10... Thanks for your fathering and concern...

To the others, thanks for your help! She's all good to haul another trip to the mountains!

If you do this hauling a lot...maybe you should invest in a diesel so you don't have to go as fast...and it will keep 100km/h up hill without shifting into 2nd.

Or better yet...a diesel with an NV4500 trans...so shifting wont be "hard" on the trans. I'll tell you what...if there had been a cop in the area....it wouldn't matter what conditions you were in...you would have gotten a ticket for speeding...and a 30+ one too...thats 6 points off your license...and it ain't cheap.

You'd also be lucky to not get a reckless fine for hauling a trailer and going that fast.

OK people. Beyond the bickering, when was the last time you checked your air filter? When your filter becomes clogged and your truck needs more air, the MAF sensor will note that there is not enough air intake. I have received this code under a load going up a hill myself with a CLEAN filter, so take it for what it's worth. Just something for you to check out.

Well...the OP has a banks intake...Chances of that filter becoming clogged is next to none. At 50K miles (when its suggested to be cleaned) it still flows better than an OE paper one. But good info none the less.
