01 Sierra Slt Transmission Death.... Slowly?

I have a 2001 Sierra SLT, with about 196k, I have noticed lately that the truck seems sluggish, dosn't drive like it use too. I have had it since almost new (20k). Acts like the brakes are on all the time, or the ebrake is on. I checked the ebrake as it seems to fine. I also checked all fluids, and they are up to par, and clean. I replaced my rotors at 160k, and the transfluid was replaced then also.

The engine also sounds like its overworking itself. the fan seems to be going all the time. like the motor is to hot.

My tow switch don't work any more, found a topic that explains how to fix that, so will do that this weekend. shouldn't cause any greif right?

The shift from 2-3 seems to jump up about 300-500rpm before it engages, like it is slipping into neutral. but it won't happen if i accelerate fast or real slow, I live in a retirement community

I Also notice that when passing on the highway, while hard acceleration the shifting seems to be really hard. If im crusin in od, and put my foot to the floor, the down shift from OD to 3 seems to Slam really hard. I havn't tried the other downshift in gears to see if that happes with them...

I have an ABS wheels sensor problem (abs kicks in at 20k or less) so the fuse is removed, found another topic that talks about that, but i can't see that causing issues. Anyone know if this truck has the bolt to remove the sensor?

I also have a non greased slip yoke, (yes found another topic explaining the clunk) so that makes the clunk when slowing down or accelerating from a stop. could that cause any greif with the shifting problem?

Any help would be great, Thanks

Jeff

is it the 4.8? i know of a few folks with that year with the 4.8, and it sounds like the clunk fan is always engaged.....as far as the shifts, my 04(100k on the clock) kicks into gear hard on a quick downshift...my guess as far as the rpms i'd say your tranny has worn clutches...

Its probably on its way out...does the fluid smell burnt or look like its an odd color.

Things dont last forever man...and nearly 200K on a 4L60E is as close to forever as your getting with this trans. Most last about 140K or there about.

Gm sells a replacement trans for really cheap, and comes with a 3year 100K warranty.

nytemare how much is the replacement tranny? with labor and all that( i know it varies but just looking for a guessimate) also is there any loop holes as far as a cheaper price?

I think its 2500USD for the trans...not sure with labor....probably 8hrs labor, plus fluid, plus flushing the lines and cooler and doing a flow test on the cooler.

I would estimate 4000 bucks....all in.

You can buy the trans and pop it in yourself...I dont know how that would affect the warranty though.

i heard some where on here that if you reusue the shell its cheaper or somethen? (i'm planning for the inevitable lol)

the General will do flow check if a problem happens during warranty (if not done at installation)..you don't have to do the job ,that is the tranny guys life ,its what he does every day ,I did it for 3 yrs ,you get new exh donuts, transfer case gasket ,flow rate checked and documented ,cooler flushed at the same time with the same machine, the labour for 4wd is about what Aiden said ,so at approx $115/hr door rate ,plus a few parts and $2500 CDN so $3500 depending on the dealers door rate ,and all you do is drive it away with a SWEET 3 yr warranty ,any dealer will honour that warranty,

I put 1 in my 93 C10 before I left the dealer life ,thank *&^%$K for that lol

trannies are usually overnight and done the next day if scheduled properly with the service dept ,

best deal anywhere,

you get what you pay for ,if ya want to flog it ,get it built and sell it ,or go ^^^ way and drive 'er

Nope...GM doesn't sell rebuilt transmissions...they're brand new...you dont reuse anything.

If my trans were to go in my truck tomorrow, It would be getting a nice new 4L80E...not a 60.

If you want to squeeze as much life as you can out of your trans though...and plan on putting another 60 in when yours does give out...look into a gearvendor overdrive unit. it splits your 4 gears into 8. This helps lighten the load, there isn't that huge gap between first and second gear anymore...and you will save fuel too...your 4th gear (or 8th now) has a drive ratio of 0.55:1 instead of 0.70:1

Its like 3 grand for a unit...but having an 8 speed and not cooking your trans by making up for the 47% ratio difference between 1st and 2nd gear.

I am looking at putting an 80 in my truck anyway...and one of these units is also high on my list.

Not sure if I'm supposed to put the link up for this site...so just Google gear vendors

Its a 5.3, 4x4. I was reading elsewhere that it could be the solenoid B. The fluid still looks brandnew, no discoloration or sweet smell. I take great care of this truck, never towed anything larger then a couch. been on gravel roads only a handfull of times, mainly used for winter hyw driving.

Solenoids usually throw codes man...but you can try it.

if the fluid isn't burnt...I doubt a clutch is slipping...

Could be your TCC solenoid to...

Have you changed your fluid and filter lately??

Also...fix the tow mode issue and see if that changes anything.

The fluid was changed about 35k ago, along with the filter. it shouldn't need changing again should it?

I read something about "brand new, not rebuilt" in the description of a trans at the dealership a few weeks ago. I know this because there was no core charge...If it were rebuilt there would almost undoubtedly be a core charge.

And No jeff 35K is still fairly new for trans fluid. usually 50K for changing.

all gm trannies have a core charge ,I returned every one with the RO number on the plastic coffin

 Parts desk guy screwed something up I guess.

Either way....still a good deal. :(:D

2500 bones for a trans warrantied for 3 years....plus install.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
