89 Silverado 5.7 Tick

I have a 89 Silverado K1500 5.7 280,000 miles on it

I understand something has to go wrong with this many miles and 3 high schoolers later :fume:

This is the first problem truck has had, other then a clutch, ball joints, tires.

There has been a random tick coming from around the #5 cylinder.

It comes and goes whenever it likes haha

Pulled the Valve cover off,

checked the valve lash - Fine

oil ports - clean

Oil - perfect.

It had the same tick, checked the above, put everything back together no tick, I drove it today ran perfectly fine, came home for about 20 minutes, when I started going down the road the tick came back,

I was maybe thinking flat spot on the cam or lifter gettin ready to go

I just thought a professional opinion would be handy Before I start my TPI 350 build :)

I would appreciate any replies and tips you may have.

Thank you

Yup sounds like it could be lifter related...no big deal. If it were a flat spot you should notice a little sputtering or bogging.

I would dump a quart of rislone in the next oil change...Or a tank of fuel or so before the next change dump a quart of ATF in the oil. Don't do any extended WOT runs with the ATF in there, but you can drive on the highway and stuff...and even pass.

This will relieve all the sludge in there, and still provide protection that an oil flush would not. Your lifters my be collapsing, and nothing will fix that...but if its just sludge or air either one of those two additives will get rid of it.

Have you inspected around the exhaust manifold for a leak...sometimes these present they way you are describing.

About a tank of fuel...whatever that is for you.

Some people run it for the entire oil change interval....every time...just replace the last quart of oil with a quart of ATF. Not really for me....I like doing it for the last tank of fuel before a change, and taking it moderately easy on the engine while its in just to be sure....also I only do it if there is an issue, like sticky lifters or really dark colored oil.
