Highway Construction Emergency Lights

Whelen is the way to go. The cool thing about Whelen is that on the newer bars, you can mix and match things. For example, if you want to put in halogen flashers you can do that, or you can put in LED flashers on the bars. If you want to have strobes on the outer edges and LEDs on the inner sections, not a problem.

We use the Whelen Vertex at work, these things are bright as hell and extremely easy to install. We pulled the bulbs in the cargo light, and replaced them with these (looks like a light bar on the back of the truck), and put these in all four corners.

Check ebay, here is a set that's ending soon.

On late model, I'm thinking '05 and later, GM trucks and some SUV's the headlight and taillight casings have a "knock-out" plug molded into the plastice housing. This is specifically for mounting an additional lamp such as a strobe/flashing lamp. Most of the time a razor knife is all that is needed to remove this "knock-out" plug. David

Some of the best prices I could find are at www.lshlights.com- just saw a Whelen 90W stobe kit with 4 tubes for $200- I have used them to buy replacement parts with good results-

After visiting 10-15 sites, can anyone that has installed one of these kits speak on what is a reasonable price.

I have seen $300 for hide-a-way strobes, and $600 for hide-a-way LED's (with four heads-2 front, 2 rear)

http://www.sirennet.com/90wstrobkitm.html Is what I have. For $200 you get a top of the line power supply, 4 cables, and 4 bulbs with the option to add 2 more if you want to later or whatever. I mounted my box right behind my seat (driver's side) and the supplied cables easily reached all 4 corners. I ran the front through the firewall and snaked them around to the front, and the backs went out through the cab vent. The strobes definitely make you much more visible at night and during the day. It took me a good 5 hours with a buddy to install these, but we took our sweet time and made everything look professional. I don't regret this kit one bit.

I do highway construction and I'm always pulling in and out of traffic.

Right now I have an amber rotating light on the roof, which works well, but I don't want to stop there.

I was thinking maybe four stobes in the grill and maybe something out the back window.

Before I going buying something, I was hoping for some ideas. (Light type and manufacturer, location, controls, cost ect.)

Any examples would be great.

I plan on driving this truck for a long time and want to do it right the first time.

These are sweeeeet. I have sold several sets of these strobes.... You cut a 1 inch hole in your OE lamp brake light and turn signal.... Snap these puppies in and man oh yeah...... Strobe City.... I sell them for about 490 bucks sometimes cheaper depends on how long you can wait (ie can I get them on my factory order)..... Kit has 4 strobes and 1 strobe module everything you need to hook it up....... Truck Lite 92845....

When it comes to emergency lighting whelend is the way to go. When applying to to hide aways in either your taillights, headlights, or foglights, strobes are the way to go. The led technology while is has advanced by leaps and bounds has not been perfected enough yet to be as effective as strobes are, plus they cost a boatload more. I have had both the whelen vertex led's in my 08 silverado and strobes. I installed the leds first and was not happy with the brightness. This is due to the fact that led's can only send light straight out from the diode, where as strobe bulbs send light out in all directions, utilizing every surface of the lense. For this reason i switched to strobes in both my fog lights and reverse lights on my silverado and have seen a drastic improvement. I use the strobe for responding to fire calls in my town and they do an excellent job of clearing traffic combined with the led lighting I also have on my truck. Ill get some pics up later

also link to a good dealer that sells complete strobe kits for a reasonable price

When selecting the size of strobe pack that you want keep this in mind, a 6 outlet 60 watt strobe pack will flash as bright as a 90 watt pack when only 4 of the strobes are connected, so if you only want 4 strobes and know you wont be putting any more in, just go for a 60 watt pack. But if you need 6 or are only putting 4 in and might add more in the future, make sure you select the 90 watt pack. IMO just get the 90 watt pack off the bat, only $35 more and it gives you the option for more strobes

For those interested heres the setup i got on my truck. Whelen Talon on the Dash, LIN4(no longer produced) in the grille, and hide aways in the fogs. My setup is a little different now but this worked great. Also got a 100 watt siren speaker in the grille.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
