Nissan Jumps On The Bandwagon

Reuters reports that Nissan Motor Co. is voluntarily recalling nearly 540,000 vehicles worldwide due to defects in brake pedal pins and fuel-gauge components.

The brake pedal recall concerns the 2008-2010 Nissan Titan, Armada, Quest and Infiniti QX56. “Nissan reports that three instances have been reported where brake pedal pins have partially disengaged, resulting in a loss of normal braking ability,” explains Autoblog.

Edmunds Inside Line adds: “In a phone conversation with Inside Line, Nissan spokesman Fred Standish said that of the three reports, one is in the U.S. and two are in the Middle East. He added that ‘the pins were misformed and could become dislodged from the housing.’ There have been no accidents, injuries or deaths reported with the brake pedal pin recall, he said.”

A separate recall concerns the 2005-2008 Nissan Armada, Titan and Infiniti QX56, as well as Nissan Frontiers, Pathfinders and Xterras produced between January and March 2006 or October 2007 and January 2008. Vehicles at higher mileage levels may have faulty gas gauges that show a quarter tank of gas is left even when the tank is almost empty.

Though both recalls are global, most of the affected vehicles were sold in the U.S. “All told, 597,781 repairs are due to be performed on U.S. vehicles, with another 79,122 repairs needed in other world markets,” notes Left Lane News.

Nissan will notify owners beginning this week and will replace the components free of charge. “For vehicles affected by the fuel gauge issues, Nissan recommends that in the mean time owners maintain a fuel level of no less than a half-tank,” Autoblog advises.

According to the Associated Press, “Nissan said the brake pedal recall begins on March 22, while the fuel-gauge recall will take place in two groups, one beginning March 22 and the other starting in April.”
