Vette Servo Mod....

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have been reading alot about the vette servo mod, so I pulled the trigger and bought one. I have been calling around asking for prices to install this, and a guy I used to rebuild an old 94C PU recommend I not put it in. First thing he asked was 2wheel or 4wheel, of course I said 4wheel and he said that it can actually hurt the 4WD.

My question is: is this true?? Is this mod only good for 2WD??

Thanking you in advance.

I've never heard of a tranny being hurt by one,2 or 4wd,But.....I was going to install one in mine before I got my Black Bear tune, and when I called-up two different transmission guys I know (both with over 25 years experience each) they both said...."You don't want that" so I said ok the heck with it!

With that being said though..there are "A-LOT" of guys on here who have one,and have had ZERO issues at all with it!

Yeah, just makes me a litle weary of doing it. I would like to hear more from others with this mod and with 4WD. Specifically folks that have been running this for a while. Anyone?

There is no difference in the 2 & 4 wheel drive trans with the exception of the tail shaft and tail shaft housing. The corvette servo just holds the bands a little tighter. It will tighten up the shifts just a tad. The tune that people get with raised trans line pressure affects the shifts much more than the corvette servo will.

There are billet servos on the market that will effect the shifts much more even to the point of being extremely harsh. the regular corvette servo will not do this. I have heard of no issues when installed properly.

Mine is a 2 wheel drive and I have a Sonnax corvette servo that holds 18% tighter than a regular coevette servo and a 4th hold billet serve that holds 40% tighter than stock. I have towed a camper for the last 5 years with no problems.

Just an opinion from a humble shade tree machanic...

Yes please add to this if you have done this on a 4 wheel drive, I have the servo sitting on the work bench waiting.

I installed this vette servo a maybe 2 months ago. I drive in soft sand in 4x4 and have no problems. It just makes your shifts quicker which to me is a good thing especially when your loading your trans in 4wheel. Less heat, less slipping clutches, bla bla bla.

Drove mine around for 2 whole days in 4wd in snow and ice. I would go as fast as 40 mph and we have a lot of stop lights, so a lot of shifting.

I don't know why everyone stresses the corvette servo, it is easy to install and is a factory part. GM wouldn't use it if it destroyed the 4L60. It is made for firmer, quicker shifts, which we all know is better for the trans (maybe not the rear end). If you don't like it and want your slow, smooth and cadillac shift back, its easy to change back in 30 mins.

It may make spike loads a little higher during shifting. The transfer case isn't going to be bothered by it anymore than the rest of the driveline. It will shift pretty rough in 4LOW but you should only be doing that on low friction surfaces so it won't hurt anything anyway.

theres some risk in any mod you do to your truck...i think the majority here is yay for the vette servo so just do it....

transmission guys are used to doing things a certain way. They would rather you install a true mechanical shift kit instead of the servo. I think the negativity toward is baseless.

Cool, I think I will go fir it. I found a guy who said he would put it in for $100, so I think I will be giving him a call back in a week or so. Thanks for all your input

It really is something you could do on your own, save your money and do it yourself.

Check these links for the install.

Yeah, I have seen the links but everyone says it's a bitch to put the cover back on... I don't know what I would do if I tried this and could not get it back on... have to pay to have it towed somewhere... that's no good.

I am pretty good with a wrench and once I do something I can do it over and over but for some reason messing with my tranny just freaks me out. Don't mean to sound like a wuss but the tranny is something I cannot afford to fawk up.
