Need Some Help With Mods To Improve 5.7 Litre Milage

Hey guys,

I got rid of my 2000 silvy(body was falling apart and started to give too many problems). It had 420000 kilometre in it.

Anyways I found an immaculate 93 yukon 2 door SLE 4x4. It has 112000 original kilomtres. Body and paint are original and perfect. Been oil sprayed every year. This truck is like it came out of a show room. VERY well taken care of inside and out. I love this truck!!

Just wondering if there were any mods I could do to get a bit better gas milage out the 5.7?

Cold air intake?

Would a throttle body spacer help?

Etc..??

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I will post pics soon.

Thanks.... :P

OH no you said TB spacer :P:lol::thumbs:

I dont know what you can do to improve you mpg's other than keep your foot off the skinny pedal, or put a 2x4 block under it. My grandpa has a 99 with the 5.7 and his old man driving gets him close to 20 just about every tank. 63mph on the highway gets him damn near run over but about 23mpg.

See pic of truck below

Yes I was a bit hesitant to mention the TB spacer....haha!!

I have heard that it does help on the throttle body engines though......just dont know for sure.

A throttle body spacer really doesn't do much even on TBI beyond lighten your wallet. There is not enough appreciable gain by raising the stock TBI unit another inch above the factory intake to bother. I would suggest you check over on www.fullsizechevy.com and look under the performance section. There is a sticky with a bunch of mods that help pick up power and mileage. A better exhaust would be a good start... headers and a free flowing type of muffler. Even a less restrictive Y pipe with the stock manifolds is a decent gain. From there the ultimate TBI mods as they are known really help. You shave the throttle shaft, remove the air horn ring at the top of the unit and even add an injector spacer( not to be confused with the TBI spacer). Adding a pressure guage and adjustable regulator can help dial the fuel pressure in. Probably the best though, even with no mods is a custom tune. The factory tune is quite lazy and a competent tuner can pick you up some power and some mileage. Westers Performance does some good TBI tunes.

Then your basics. Correct alignment, tire pressure and driving conservatively along with ensuring the truck is in a good state of tune.

Nice find btw, you should post some pictures. I love the GMT400 body style and have an ultra low mileage 96 pickup of my own.

Thanks for all the info!

I was looking at getting a tune but I thought these pre ODBII vehicles did not have a programable PCM.

I'll contact Westers and see whats available.

I'll post pics soon!

The 95 and older trucks have programmable chipsets in them. So instead of pulling the computer and sending it away you just purchase a custom tuned chip and swap it for your original.

Good Luck!

Not much for mods to improve gas mileage .. someone mentioned a custom tuned chip ... that might help a little with performance ....

For maximum gas mileage... now that you have bought this with 112000 km, and would like to keep it running in prime condition... I would get new ACDelco plugs, replace the plug wires, distributor, etc... get a new clean air filter.... and get the injector system flushed..

Just did a full tune up on it tonight.....plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I'll pick up an air filter in the morning. Everything I took out of it was original!! It should be running a bit smoother now and hopefully get a bit better milage.
