What Is This Thing?

On the 5.3, there is a part of the engine that im wondering its purpose. While changing my oil filter, i saw it. Its very near, kind of above and towards the front, the oil filter. It looks similar to a thermostat housing. Its held on by 2 bolts and has a "neck" that faces up but nothing coming out of it or into. I put my finger up in there and its full of sand, just wondering what it is. thanks.

it's the motor oil cooler block off plate. the "neck" serves no real purpose.

 

on trucks with an oil cooler that is the attachment point for the oil cooler lines.

Is there an RPO code for an oil cooler? I cant remember if I have one, but I would like to know my oil temp. I must love gauges, I want to know everything thats going on!

I don't know what package includes the motor oil cooler on the 1500 series trucks, but I know that every 2500 series truck I have seen with the 6.0L had the oil cooler. I don't know anything about being able to read the oil temp. The item referred to is just a block off plate that covers the inlet and outlet for the oil cooler lines.

I'm with you on that. Being an airplane mechanic, I like to know what's going on too.
