Tranny Flush Question

Recommended Posts

Ok so I plan on flushing the tranny fluid and replacing the tranny filter this weekend, and I will be using the following link as my reference guide: http://www.gmfullsize.com/forum/showthread.php?t=179148

My question is:

In the thread it says to pump out and fill the tranny a total of 3 times, then it goes on to talk about how to replace the filter. But I am confused... Do I flush 3-4 times (leave it empty), replace the tranny filter, then fill??

Or.... do I pump out the old fluid once, take off the pan, replace the filter, then flush and fill 3 more times through the new filter?

I hope the above makes sense, thanking you in advance for your help.

You pump it out through the new filter, the old filter will require you to drop the pan on a full trans and lose another 2-3 quarts of fluid. There's not going to be that much crap in your trans that it will ruin a new filter, and 90% of the crap will be in the pan anyway, which you clean before you re-install.

You are not pumping the entire trans out each cycle of the flush, just 3-4 quarts of fluid...there's approx 15 quarts in there.

Every time I have done it I, either

pulled the plug on the pan and drained the fluid

or

pumped 3 quarts out using the line

Then changed the filter. (edit make sure you refill the pan before continuing) And continued on flushing the system till I used the 15 or 18 quarts depending on how many I had to flush with.

Just to make sure as MUCH of the fluid AS POSSIBLE runs threw the new filter..

Thank you both. That is a very good how-to, and I have all the recommended stuff to do this, but the thread was not very clear on this area. Thx!
