Gt5 Rear End Slop

Question

Posted

I been noticing for awhile that my rear diff has some excessive backlash and lately i think it starting to make clunking sound. I do alot of towing between 10 and 12,000lb loads plus plowing in the winter. I was wondering what exactly this could be and what type of money am i looking at to have it fixed. I just hope i dont need to replace the diff as i am pretty much broke now and this truck is my income. I know nothing about differentials so i would have a shop repair this. Any input would be a big help. Thanks guys

Check u-joints for slop first.

It could be a worn rearend making the slop....that means a full rebuild of the rear end with a new ring and pinion...so start small, check the cheap stuff and move on from there. Chances are its your U-joints that are causing the slop.

Thanks, for the reply! Ujoints are new, i noticed the sloppy rearend when i had the shaft out. So its prob a complete rebuild? Yikes not good for me!

Have it checked by a drive line shop man...its kind of hard to feel what kind of slop we are talking about over the Board man.

Could be in need of adjustment, Bearings...anything really.

the axle shafts have to come out and the rear driveshaft, then the backlash can be checked ,

if the backlash is out ,the diff would be a noisey bitch,

some driveline clunk in a 4wd is normal, relax, like said ,get a few things looked at ,small steps
