01 2500hd Lug Nut Covers

I'm trying to do some detailing on my truck and the center caps need a very thorough cleaning an polishing. How on earth do you get the black plastic lug nut covers out of the center caps so you can polish the chrome and blacken the lug nut covers? Any suggestions on what product to use on the faded lug nut covers would be appreciated too.
