Well I just bought 6 quarts of Penzoil Platinum 5w-30 Synthetic and FRAM XTENDED Guard Filter. First time using synthetic and I plan to change it every 6000-7000 miles. Anything I should expect from synthetic oil compared to conventional oil. My truck currently has 3200 miles on it, should I change now or wait a little while?

change it, get an ac delco filter. frams are junk, remeber the filter does not last as long as the synthetic motor oil so you may be able to get 6-7k out of the oil but the filter is going to be backed up like a toilet...

+1 Ditch the Fram, the are trash. Get a mobile 1 or a K&N. I like the K&N because they have a nut welded on the bottom to help loosen it.

Do the filters you all recommend have a longer life than a conventional one? I want to only get under my truck 6-7000 miles. I have had success with fram and that is why I bought one with extended life. What filters give extended life?

K&N, Mobil1 and Royal Purple are all compatible with the extended OCI's of synthetic oil. I'm pretty anal when it comes to oil...I just extended my OCI to 6500km...about 4K miles...I would never go past 5K miles personally....but thats just me...I know most oils protect well beyond this...

With a Fram oil filter, you should celebrate if it fits. Everything else is wishful thinking.

Although the Fram "extended Guard" is a far better filter than their regular orange can of death, I would still opt for a Wix or Pur One filter, especially on a new truck.

I am currently running PYB with a Wix filter but will be updating to PP this coming fall, suppose to be great oil and shoud have no problems doing extened OCI's but that is dependent on your driving style/conditions.

Go to www.bobistheoilguy.com some great info over there!

Will the OEM filters last as long as I want it to?

Sure it will. Even running regular oil and going by the OLM, many recommended changed don't happen for 7-8000 miles. Personally I run the OEM filters and synthetic oil (mine's Amsoil) and change every 5K, which is about once a year in my truck. If I drove it more often, I'd run 7500 mile intervals, but I like changing it at least once a year to avoid any accumulation of condensation in the oil.

I was thinking that they might. I currently have 3200 on my truck and my 'oil guage' still shows 60%. I would think the original filter with synthetic would work well. I will take the FRAM back to walmart and get the AC/Delco.

I'm with the others here. I think that is a good idea!

I am not a fan of frams but the xtended guard is one of the best filters made.

Agreed, I have been using the XG's in my truck now for 2 oil changes along with the wal-mart full synthetic and my truck seems to love it. While the normal frams are crap the XG's are actually designed for syn oil, and are of a better construction overall with upgraded filter media and a wire mesh.

I ran amsoil in everything, but I have found the wally full syn to be just as good. and cheaper. just my .02
