6-speed Tranny Cold Feet, Help

Well, I like the Sierra (4wd, 5.3, 3.42, ext cab) that I have worked a great price on. After test driving it twice, my only complaint is the throttle/tranny feel. It just feels a little sluggish. I think some is due to pedal feel, which is a non-issue, as I'll get used to it over time. However, when accelerating from 30mph in a way that causes a downshift, things just felt a little slow. Will this get better? I don't think this is a problem with the truck.

Am I just not used to it? I am coming from a 2000 Tacoma but have driven many miles in 5.3s with the 4sp.

For the record, one reason I like the GMs is that they have the RIGHT balance of power and efficiency FOR ME. Thanks alot.

My Friend,

Possibly you are simply not used to it.

I bought a new Silverado 5.3/3.42 Crew Cab with the 6-speed auto about a month ago. I find it incredibly more zippy than our 2004 Tahoe 5.3/3.73. The shifting is seamless, as well; actually smoother than my 2006 Duramax's Allison 1000.

Perhaps a few more test drives will help.

The new truck; 5.3 engine with the 6-speed tranny linked to a 3.42 rear end (not the 3.08) is really the finest combination that GM has come out with for a long, long time.

Hope this helps,

Steve

#1) it takes a few hundred miles for the ECM & TCM to learn your driving style and adjust shifting/performance. it does get better

#2) ALL GM trucks are over loaded with torque management... 4spd, 6spd etc it doesnt matter. if it still bothers you after the initial break in period you can have the TM tuned out

i have a 2010 silverado 5.3 with the 6spd tranny but the 3.08 gears. i love it. i test drove one with 3.42 and i prefer the 3.08(i dont tow very often) also have an 08 5.3 with the 4 spd and i think your just used to when the older 4 spds would shift down its a bigger "jump" the 6 spd can downshift and its not as .... big of a jump in gear ratio i dont know if that makes sence to you but im havein a hard time explaining it. either way i like the 6spd alot better than the 4spd

100% true. I hated my 6 speed for about a month until I got some miles on it then one day it seemed to click and it is leaps and bounds better than my 4 speed.

+1 here. I have a 2009 with the 6spd and 3.08 gears and at first i thought something was wrong. I had to get into the gas pedal ALOT and Ireally didnt like it. I now have 15000 miles on it and all of a sudden it just woke up. I love it and wouldnt change a thing about it.

I think you should get away from the 5.3, pay an extra 1k and get you the 6.2l.... Fuel mileage is about the same Regardless of what the sticker advertises I promise you wont think its sluggish..... I tune them, but even stock, once it breaks in..... HELL YEA!!! Even with all the TM in, and my stock tune on an 09 GMC 4dr 4wd Sierra,(NOT A DENALI).... 15.09 1/4th mile....94mph trap.... with tune...14.41 1/4mile at 97mph...Just a tune, with NO boltons... Thats next. But its just my opinion, and we all know that opinions are like A**holes, they all stink... :dunno:

Mine cost $0 (it was $1950 on the sticker though)

Is it possible you were feeling a double down shift?

Actually, yes, I think so. It was just loafing around at very low RPM when I got in the throttle a little. So it's possible it was in OD even at low speed and needed 2 gears to get up and go. Didn't think of that. Thanks.
