Wheel & Tires Question?

Hello, I'm asking this question for a friend. He asked me and I gave him an answer I just want to make sure its right. He just purchased some Moto Metal 951 which are 17x9. He wants to put Toyo Open country M/T 265/70/17 (32")tires on them. Toyo lists the approved rim width for these at 7.0-8.5 and his wheels are 17x9. So he wants to know if they will fit and work...I'm no expert and don't care to tell it so I told him it doesn't look like they would or at least there not approved by Toyo specs. He's still hell bent on getting them so I'm trying to give him the right information so if anyone can help me out on this I would greatly appreciate it!! I also tried the search but for some reason I can never really find what I'm looking for...operator error for sure!

They will fit sure, but make sure he keep's the air pressure up or they will dismount them selves going down the road

 

tell him to run 5psi above max pressure and don't let them fall any more then 5-7psi below max pressure . . .

so basically theyll fit, but not properly. personally, i wouldnt run them if the toyo suggests not to. they dont come up with those suggested rim widths out of thin air. why not go with a different tire size? like 285/65/17- should be about the same diameter. or step up to 33s (285/70/17). dont know aht truck he has, but a 33 will fit a gmt800 truck with just a leveling of the front end.

Ya i'm with you on that one, it'll fit on th wider rim i told ya how to make them work but they won't be as safe as they should/Could be . . .

NEVER run a tire above max pressure! Never, ever, no matter what.

 

A 265 (10.5") can be run on a 9" wide wheel just fine. It's a 1/2" wider than the manufacturer recommends, so it may not wear ideally... but at that width you will not have to worry about the bead separating going down the road.

 

A 285 would be a better idea though.

Funny about every truck tire i have owned was set 5psi above the Max PSI they wear even and last a long time no blow outs . . .

Thus, exactly the reason you (readers) should take anything you read on an internet forum for a grain of salt.

 

The ironic part about this post... Mike's recommending is that the solution to breaking one of the manufacturers recommendations (wheel width) is to break ANOTHER manufacturers recommendation (MAX PSI).
