'09 Whine

I have an '09 5.3 w/6sp and my truck makes what a think is a whine that's most noticeable taking off in first gear and then after the shift to second I don't notice it that much. It is very obvious when using the blue tooth while talking on the phone through my speaker system. Took it to the dealer and they said it was typical of that transmission and was the planetary gear whine. I have only ridden in one other 5.3 six speed and it was a tahoe and it didn't do that or I couldn't here it. What do you guys think?

I'm sorry, I only have the 4 speed. But, I do know it is typical for some 4 speeds to make that whine, it'll still last just as long. It could also be a power steering pump. As long as tranny fluid is bright red, full, and not foaming, it'll be fine.

09 no whine. I assume you are not hear the sound coming thru speakers??? Probably not an issue and you documented at the dealer so enjoy.

Hi Brandon:

I know nothing about the newer 6spd.'s. - - - but I have learned a lot about a Loud Whine in the 4L80e four speed A/T's within these past 4 months.

Some of the 4L80e transmissions do exhibit a quite "whine" in 1st gear. You can only hear it with the radio/stereo OFF and the drivers side window down. This is due to a stronger straight cut 1st gear in these heavy duty A/T's.

If the whine is LOUD - something is NOT RIGHT. Mine was so loud that people stopped to stare as the truck started from a stop. It was even worse if there were cars beside me in traffic - the sound would be amplified bouncing off them.

Take it to your Dealer and complain. NO NEW TRUCK should have a WHINE in 1st Gear. Get it clearly documented on the Service Forms... write it up yourself on the form - if the Service Writer doesn't describe it correctly . ie Unacceptably LOUD WHINE IN 1st GEAR.

Do not accept the explanation that it is "normal" - ask them to show you two other trucks on the lot that make that noise, tell them you didn't pay $30K to $40K for noise transmission. If they don't fix it - Contact GM/Chevy Customer Assistance.

I just went though this with my 2005 2500HD - with less than 36K miles. Thank goodness the original owner complained about it starting at 16K miles in 2007. GM/Chevy just replaced the transmission at no charge. Both my Service Manager and GM/Customer Assistance were helpful in resolving the issue.

you might want to see if there is a 2009 Problems thread on Facebook - and Post your problem there.

Read The Original Service Bulletin for the 2004+ 4L80e here

This does not apply to your 6spd - but there may well be a newer Service Bulletin that does.

good luck,

after reading and posting I was listening to the truck a little more. I do hear it a bit in first gear. Now just how loud yours is would be the factor to determine if it s normal.

My brother and I went to a gun show today and I wanted to see if he noticed it and he didn't. It really is not loud it's just there and I can sometimes be ultra sensative about things with my truck. The dealer has been made aware and it's documented. I'm just gonna let it go unless it gets louder. I know I have a 100,000 mile power train warranty I just like to catch things early regardless of who is paying for it. Thanks everyone for your responses.
