Tranny Acting Up?

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that my tranny is doing a couple things and was wondering if I should try servicing it or saving for a new one. This is my 00 Z71 with 150,000 miles.

For the last 6 months or so it seems to take a long time to go back into OD. This happens both after a downshift from the gas pedal or manually by the use of the shifter. Recently it seems that it will hold the shifts longer in both 1-2 and 2-3 but never both at the same time. A couple days ago it took way long to do the 1-2 after I pulled out of the Dairy Queen and was not in the throttle very far, just normal surface street driving. So far I don’t notice it slipping, or at least it isn’t doing it bad enough to really notice.

The first 8-9 years and 130,000 miles of it’s life were hard miles towing a horse trailer. I know towing is hard on tranny’s. I did not own it then so I don’t know if they were easy on it or pounded it. I know them a little and am pretty sure it wasn’t pounded. Also, I have all records of the truck and it has never had any previous issues with the tranny.

I was thinking of changing the filter and having it flushed but I don’t want to waste my time if it’s going out. What do y’all think?

Have you done a recent trans flush / refill? I would think that would be the first place to start. 150K is a lot of trans miles.... Any way of knowing if they ever rebuilt it in the first 130K?

Jim, I checked the records. Apparently at Jiffy Lube on 10/2003 @ 66,000 miles the filter was changed and the fluid was flushed. Then on 1/2008 at @ 116,500 miles the dealership it was purchased at flushed the trans allong with tire rotation and oil change. The trans other wise has not been touched.

At 150K it is quite possible that the trans is simply ready for a rebuild. They are good units but 150K is a lot of miles... especially if it was used to tow like you say. I still say it's worth trying a flush, but that might not fix anything.

Try the fluid and filter. The trans should not be worn out at 150K towing or not. If the truck was towing within specs, abnornal wear should not have occurred and the recommended maintenance should have been sufficient.

Flush it out then refill.

I think I will do a service on it. Yesterday I went up into the mountains to go shooting and put around 200+ miles on it and it never once acted up.

I'd go ahead and check around for a reputable shop (preferably a one/two man shop IMO) and start talking with them. You'll get an idea of budget and options. Good thing about the 4L60 is that it is well known and (relatively) inexpensive to rebuild.

UPDATE: As stated above I was going to change filter and flush. However it is now really acting up and I am going to have it rebuilt.

My commute is mostly freeway and when I get on I have to ease into the throttle. The tranny starts to slip and it will take the engine to the rev limiter. Or at least it did the first time when I didn't catch it. It now does this every time I get on the freeway. I will also have a real sluggish 2-3 shift about 1/2 the time and has issues with passing gear.

My shop hired a bunch of fed up GM techs from the local dealership. Since the railroad isn't doing OT these guys are all taking on side jobs. I am possibly going to contact a couple shops as well.

I know it can vary from region to region but can some of you chime in on how much it cost you to do a rebuild? Thanks in advance!

I'd plan on $1500

That would be removal and repair right?

My 1999 Sierra's tranny went south last summer with 125k on it. I had it rebuilt, total cost was $1250.00. I don't know what they do, but I suspect they inspect all the gears and replace all of the hydraulic parts which do the shifting etc. I've been really pleased with the overall results and hope I'll get another 125k on this rebuilt unit. The symptoms leading up to the rebuild, sluggishness when accelerating (as if something, like a clutch was slipping). Finally in the end, Reverse wouldn't work well and then it finally went to the shop when it wouldn't go into 3rd on highway.

Mine is having the same sluggish feeling and now is slopping past 2500. Try getting up to speed while keeping it under 25. its hard. Thank you for your reply.

As an update one of the Ex GM Techs I work with has the truck. He is off Thur/Fri & should be digging into it tomorrow. Oh, and I also purchased a Corvette Servo! I miss my truck. I have been driving a 1986 CUC-V that the military ordered with 4.56 gears. My commute is mainly freeway and I am tired of the big rigs passing me on the freeway!
