6.0 With 6spd Engine Braking Questions

This truck is new to me, and when in tow mode it does the whole engine breaking , wich brings the RPMS up tp 5,000 sometimes. Is this normal, seems pretty extreme sometimes. Also is this hard on the truck. Thanks for any help with this

I posted the same thing on the light duty forum. My 6.2/6 speed recently did this and it freaked me out. It worked great just didnt expect it since my last 2 four-speeds with tow haul didnt do this. Mine hasnt shot up to 5K but has been to 4K.

its normal

huh, ok, just seems wierd.

think of it like, downshifting a stick shift to slow down...you drop into lower gears the engine will rev pretty high....

The trucks tuning does a pretty decent job of applying throttle at just the right time to smooth out the downshift (no sudden jerk). So I doubt it will have a negative impact on the drivetrain. But the tow haul grade braking is over aggressive in certain situations in my opinion. I often use manual shifting to provide engine braking on certain long steep hills. That way I have more control over rpms.

Keep in mind that T/H is supposed to be for when you're running more than 75% of your rated weight, so odds are GM set it up for folks running heavy and your comments are based on towing a lighter trailer. If you don't like it, you can get out of T/H mode, or if in T/H, just shift into M5 (instead of D or M6) and not get ANY grade braking if I remember what the GM trans engineers were talking about on this forum a while back.

Tow Haul is nice I guess, and as they have said, it is normal. I liked it better with my 8.1/Allison. With this truck I prefer running in manual shift mode when loaded. With the 4.10s and this 6 speed, holding in 4th or 5th is a dream while loaded
