Door Hinges

Went out on a ride today, up to West Point NY. I noticed my driver side door would shake when i hit a bump, and i could feel an air leak. Upon further inspection, theres a good amount of play in the driver door and the ext door, to the point it was sagging a little and the gab between the driver door and the ext door werent even. I notice there are pins for the hinges, any ever had the experience on replacing these? They do sell just the pins to replace right, as im assuming that the pins would wear before the actual hinge? Help is greatly appreciated.

Those pins sit in a bushing, and yes the pins wear into the bushing keeping the hing from actually wearing. You need to go to auto parts and get a pin and bushing set for your door. It's really not that hard on these newer chevrolets.

Thanks a bunch. Will have to do that, as my doors are sagging enough that the tops of the doors touch, and the paint is chipping away.

Just looked it up real quick, and this is what i came up with.

Yep, that looks like what I was talking about. Looks like that product does one front door.

They make a better product that lets you replace the pins with bolt in pins that do not have to be press fit. They carry them at this site :

I have used them and they do work. You can also order oversize bushings from the main supplier of the hinge kit. I also do recommend the pin removal tool. This all beats the Doorman kit and trying to press in the new pins correctly.

That is a nice kit, but it states 2 kits per door, so thats $280 on the pins alone, and $50 for the tool. A little steep for me right now.

I agree, I'd just do the pins and bushings you found earlier and plus it'll still look stock with the dormans. The dormans are plenty enough to hold the door up properly. I don't see how anything could be "better" than those pins and bushings. Like I said the kit is nothing to put in, just takes a screwdriver and hammer and maybe something to hold the door up while the pins are out.

The kits are better in the fact that the pins screw into new brackets. They are easy to replace and once you have done the kit on just one door, the next time you need to replace the bushings will only take about 1 hr total. I have done it twice since my bushing holes were enlarged by a worn door.

Key points:

As to replacing the pins, remember you will need to use a grinder to grind off the base of the original pins. There is no other way to do that part.

And make sure to press the new pins in straight or you will wear out the new pins and bushings faster than the ABS and BRAKE lights start flashing in a 1500.

Also, make sure the new bushings sit snugly into their holes. If they are able to spin at all you will be redoing this very soon.

Last, if it seems you would need the strength of GOD to press the bushing into the hinge bracket, the bushing is too large and you should see if you can get another that fits.

And before you ask, the wires that connect within the door do not have a plug at the point where they connect to the body. To take the door completely off you will need to unplug the wires inside the door feed them out and then back in. Not a hard job, just a PITA.

Good luck and I hope no one around you learns any new curse words.

Like stated above...stay away from the kits with the clips that hold the pins in. I installed a kit from NAPA that was like that and the pins/bushings that I installed where more sloppy than the ones that I took out. I ended up getting the parts from my local GM dealer. I think they ran a little over $100 for one door. The GM kit does not include new brackets but the pins are threaded and drawn in with a nut.

Good Luck!
