Brakes Smoking?

Hey Guys,

I was out driving this evening, my truck was behaving oddly, but I didn't really give it a second thought, it was hot and real humid, and I know sometimes it can lag down when the air is thick. I stopped at a truck stop to get something to drink, and when I got out I saw my left rear wheel well was billowing smoke. I looked at it and the caliper and rotor were glowing bright red. I immediatly called OnStar and had a tow truck dispatched, as the truck continued to smoke for another 15 mins. I had it dropped off at my local dealer who isn't open till monday. I'm thinking it's going to need at the minimum, new caliper, new rotor, new pads, probably new rubber lines. it could verry well need a new tire and rim as they got torched. Anything else that I'm missing that could need to be done? and what the heck could casue this? I just had the rear brakes done not 6 months ago to the tune of $650, so this angers me, but I suppose parts wear out.

Sounds like a sticking caliper to me. The pads dragged on the rotor hard and long enough to create tons of heat turning everything red hot. Sure hope the damage is limited; sounds like they didn't rebuild the calipers on the brake job.

I agree. Stuck caliper. I hope you got the job done at a reputable shop, so they can cover the damages. At 650 for a brake job, yeah,m I'd be pissed too. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Good thought. I would think both wheels would be smoking if the parking brake were engaged. Also, the times I've seen the parking brake left on, the pad material wears down fairly quickly. The result is a lot of smoke but not enough heat to keep it billowing smoke for fifteen minutes.

if the emergency brake was not used vey much then applied and then released the cable on the left(or right) wheel could be seized on and yes a stuck brake can cause a lot of heat

I had to have a caliper replaced a couple months ago, it stuck in the open position and PSR pad wore out really fast cause it was doing all the braking. Warranty covered the new caliper (which I knew last year was sticking at the time) but wasn't when it was inspected. Either way it is free for me. Your wheel most likely will be fine, they'll probbaly reaplce the rotor, pad and caliper to start. Just so you know, GM doesn't use a very good disc rotor. I've seen them develope rust in the center and rot within 3-4 years after a vehicle was purchased brand new. If I were you, I would use a better rotor like EBC which also cost less then GM's rotor which is $250 a rotor. I got a set of EBC slotted rotors with HD pads for under $500. Thats half the price of GM's rotors and a hell of alot better quality and stopping power has am improved feel to it that I've noticed. I inspect the rotors every few months or less and after having them on for over a year they still look almost new with no rust in the center of the discs like the ones GM uses.

I went and looked at it today in the day light at the dealer parking lot, and the tire is toast, so I'm guessing the wheel is probably bent as well. The e-brake is still working fine and I use it every time I put the jet ski in the water which is every couple days during the summer. can't wait to see what they want to charge me.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
