Newbie question:

I just purchased a 2010 GMC Seirra Ext Cab with the basic AM/FM radio. I want to purchase the upgrade radio but have been told it would hav eto be reprogramed by a dealer. True? and if so is it expensive?

Yes, this is true. The vin will have to be put in the radio or it will lock up. This usually cost around $55-$75 or whatever an hour of labor is worth. Unless they're nice and only charge you half an hour or whatever.

May or may not be the case, I purchased a 2010 factory USB one and just plugged it in with no programming necessary. I would get the radio and try it yourself first before you shell out $50-80 dollars. Just my 2 cents... :rolleyes:

Don't know about 2010....but starting in 2003 the radios had to be programmed to the VIN. They would either not play very loud or sometimes go into lock. I have replaced the one in my 2005. Had to take a trip to the dealer and get it programmed using a tech11. I know personally this was the case at least through 2007. I am retired now and have not stayed current with the new models.

 

Now if one was purchased from some of the people selling them on the net, and you gave them your Vin, they would program the radio and it would work when you put it in the truck.
