6.0l Not Very Responsive. Tune?

Recommended Posts

K guys, how do I get more torque out of my 2004 6.0L? I just upgraded from a 5.3 and am now missing my 5.3 torque. Because it is a 2500, I just am assuming that it has the 410 rearend, but don't know. How can I make it more responsive? It is sluggish off the line. I don't think I could break loose the tires even if I was on ice. I can feel that it has a lot of mid to high range power on the freeway, but I was hoping for a little more gettup off the line. What do you think I should do to get it?

Tune

What is a tune? Do you mean a tune up??? Or...... is it a device like a chip that you are refering to?

Custom tune = where they hook a computer up to your ecm and make changes to parameters for the engine and tranny to make it both faster and more drivable. Tuner = hand held device that plugs into you obd-II port and changes parameters for your engine and transmission and also allows you to check codes and manually adjust parameters.

Do you have the 6.0L? How many horses did you gain? Where did you notice the differance? I am not dumb enough to think I am going to make this into a dragster, but it would be nice if I could get a little more torque out if it. But I would have to get around 300 more horses to justify the cost. What did you experiance?

With a custom tune, you can expect 25-30hp out of a custom tune. Check your glove box for the RPO codes to find out what gears your truck has. Most likely, it will have 3.73's, but possible 4.10's. If you find GT4 then you have 3.73', If you have GT5, you have 4.10's. Also, from your sig photo, it looks like you have larger than stock tires. You can expect a little loss from that as well. IF the truck wasn't reprogrammed for the proper tire size, your shift points will be off, your speedo will be off, letting you believe your going slower than you think. A custom tune would fix that. :dunno:

Other reasons your not feeling the power of the 6.0 as much is the trucks heavier, you have a taller 1st gear in the 4L80e trans and the torque management is horrible. A custom tune would help you alot.

Report back on what gears you have.

BTW, nice looking truck :P

I found the "GT4" code so it must be a 3.73. Would you recommend I change the rearend to 4.10 before a tune? what custom tune would you recommend? I drive a lot of highway miles and tow only about 10% of the time. I like the sound of a 4.10 but should I be concerned about gas mileage? I have 285s and I am sure that the last guy never reset the spedo or anything else for that matter.

By the way, thanks for the compliments about my truck. But I got to be honest with you and tell you that I like your truck more. I had an '07 extended cab new body style and loved it. When I decided to get a crew, I just decided a newer body crew wasn't in the budget for now. Your truck looks great.

if i remeber that right, your saying you miss the torque of a 5.3 going to a 6.0? if so are you high? the tune is the easiest way to take the chains off the motor's power, i'd stick with the 3.73s as they are the best all around gears for city/highway driving unless your planning on throwing swampers on that thing..changing gears is a big kick in the wallet as you have the front and rear diff to change out

4.10s wouldn't hurt your mileage, and in some cases could make it better. I have the 6.0 with 4.10 gears and average 13-14 city and 15-18 highway. The 4.10's would work better since your running 285's but it's around $1300 for both front/rear gear swap with labor and install kit. I'd try the tune first and see if that makes you happy. If the tune doesn't do it for you, then I'd suggest skipping the 4.10's and go straight for 4.56's if you plan on keeping the tire size or ever plan on running a taller tire. The re-tune is free from most tuners, you just pay for the shipping.

And thanks... I like my crew alot. :fume:

Thanks guys. I just don't have a nack for this stuff, so I appreciate the help. What custom tune would you suggest? I have heard great things about the Bear performance. The others just seam to be a "out of the box" tune, and I can't believe that that would be very custom. Every truck will be a little different, won't it? So, which tunes would you suggest I consider?

Well there's 3-4 I'd trust.

Blackbear Performance (I currently have)

Nelson Performance

Go Wheatley

Pretty much in that order.

Tune should help, I'm looking at the same for my 3.73 6.0 Burb. The taller first gear of the 4l80e versus the 4l60e on the 5.3 probably has a lot to do with it too. Those 285's aren't helping either, they reduce the effective 3.73 axle ratio to around 3.50 if your truck came stock with 245's.
