99 Silverado Stepside - Brake Light Replacement..?

One of my Brake Lights went out on my 99 StepSide Silverado... Does anyone know the procedure on how to replace brake lights on my type of truck.. or know of any Diagrams that show you how..?? One thing to mention is that my Tailgate doesn't open at all.. It was like that when I bought the truck, I think a cable might be broken that connects to the handle/latch..!!

Drop tailgate down and remove a few screws holding tail light fixture in. Twist bulb socket out, replace bulb, twist socket back in, and replace light fixture. The tailgate will have to drop down to gain access to the screws.

 

If you want to change the bulb, you are going to have to find out how to drop the tailgate.

is there any kinda trick to pop the tailgate open if the latch/handle dont work..??

I can't remember if there is an access panel on the inside of the tailgate or not...if so remove it and you should see 2 linkage arms running from the handle to the latches on the sides of the tailgate. If there is no access panel, remove the handle and you should see the 2 linkage arms. Try to squeeze them toward each other...this should release the latches and the tailgate should open. More than likely, one of the linkage arms has come off though. If that is the case, you may have to dig around in the tailgate if it has dropped. If you can't squeeze the linkage arms toward each other, try spraying the mechanisms and latches down with WD40 or other penetrating oil to free them up a little.

There's no access panel on that model, you're gonna have to open the tailgate somehow to properly replace that light.

Being there's no access panel on the inside of the tailgate, you're going to have to remove the handle and try it from the front side. Check the 2nd link I posted and it will walk you threw the steps to open it.
