Chrome Rims And Winter

Ok...first of all, I live in Iowa....they use lots of salt here.....its pathetic....and it ruins almost everything. My 07 GMC GMT-900 has 55,000 miles on it....Tires are almost worn out and will not make it through winter. I'm planning a tire purchase before the snow flies. I'll be installing a leveling kit and plan to go to 285/70R17 instead of the stock 265/70R17. I am considering going to some aftermarket wheels at the same time, but I don't want to ruin them in the winter. I am really not wanting to run a winter set and a summer set....I've done that before.....it seems silly to be swapping and storing tires and wheels.

So anyone running some nice chrome aftermarket wheels in the winter? How are they holding up, how often do you wash them, etc?

I do not want clear coated aluminum wheels, the salt eats them....and I do not really want to polish a non-coated wheel several times a year, so I thought chrome aluminum wheels would be the best choice. I have found a few Ultra wheels I like.... the Goliath is one of them : http://www.ultrawheel.com/wheel_detail.cfm...nd=1&id=174

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

I run my chrome wheels in the winter and wash them after every storm event. If you don't, they'll pit.

If your worried, I'd try and pick up a winter set of rims :dunno

I just hate the thought of storing a stack of tires and wheels all the time.... I considered getting some Tires for my stock wheels and making them my winter tire/wheel setup, maybe even a mud terrain tire. Then possibly get the custom wheels and highway tread for the good weather seasons.....just lots more money! I do work for Bridgestone though and get a decent discount in case I do buy two sets of tires....I guess I think about it awhile longer....

Salt is a killer on wheels...and everything else for that matter. Chrome rims can last, but the key is to clean the salt off ASAP. That is a pain in the winter, but if the chrome gets pitted or damaged, there in not much you can do about it. I have had good luck with American Racing wheels in the past. This one is similar to that one you were looking at:

AMERICAN RACING DALE EARNHARDT JR CANNON CHROME

If you are going to keep you truck for a while, I would get winter tires to put on your current rims when you get the new ones. You will have the rims anyway, and your can keep the new chrome looking good.

Wash and wax a lot. Wax wax wax is what protects chrome. Also painting the back side of the wheel not only looks good it saves the rear where chrome will start to flake first. When i lived in missouri i would do that everytime time i got home even if i knew i was going to be back in the slush tbe next day.

ANY aftermarket chrome wheel will be wrecked inside of 2 years. You can wash and wax them every day. If any salt touches tham, they will peel.

If you read most wheel MFG's warranty policy, they will tell you the warranty is void if used in the winter.

One of my friends used Zoop Seal on his aftermaket rims and ran them through the winters. Kept them up without peal or blemish for a few years but it is bound to happen. I was always jealous of him in the spring/summer/fall because he would just wash and they always looked freshly polished.
