Any Other Guys Have A Rough Running Transmission/engine?

I just purchased a 10' 2500HD, work truck model, 4x4 with the 6.0 not too long ago, but from 100+ miles to the now 1800 miles on the truck, my trucks transmissions is running really rough/and finicky.

First issue, under the 40/20/40 seat config, there is a slight to very noticeable vibration that comes and goes, almost like your going over a rocky road, but I am only idling.

Second issue is a really hard engine break at 10mph, consistently when I come to a stop, right around 10mph, normal breaking, the engine performs an engine break and it's so noticeable people sitting in the cab are thrown forward slightly.

Third issue, randomly when I am giving gas for a quick period, and then stopping (crossing an intersection, or moving up in traffic) I will come to a stop, but it's almost like someone rear ends me, and the whole truck will want to lurch forward and if you're looking at it while it's doing it, you would swear someone just rear ended me.

I love this truck to death, it's worlds better than my 09 tundra I got rid of, but even being the work truck model, the problems don't seem normal.

Dealer told me to give it to 1500 miles, because the transmission is 'learning still' they told me this after they reflashed the transmission programming @ 100 miles.

I have a 2010 2500HD with 6.0 4x4 3.73 with 8000 miles. I have not experienced the problems you are describing. I assume you are not pulling a trailer and you do not have the "tow mode" button pushed. The engine brake when in tow mode can really get your attention if you are not expecting it. It really sounds like the engine brake is engaging. Have you tried driving it in tow mode? The engine brake is very noticable in tow mode.

GM's corporate customer service is very responsive. If you don't get satisfaction from the dealer you should contact the corporate folks. The phone number is 313-667-7153. They have been great helping me resolve a problem I had.

What kind of help did they offer, if you don't mind me asking? I have a bad taste in my mouth from Toyotas Corporate service, what a joke they were.

Do you have a 4sp or 6 sp trans?

The 6 sp trans takes some getting used to, for the first couple thousand miles mine did all kinds of strange things. I was told the trans needs to learn and it should get better the more you drive it. Now over 3,500 miles and I am not noticing the quick shifts or sudden down shifts, seems normal now.

I would give it some more miles.

Was this diagnosed by the dealer?

The gas engines do not have an "engine brake feature". When Tow/Haul is engaged, the downshift program is much more aggressive than when not engaged. What you describe, sounds like it is dropping down into first.

This sounds like a surging issue, not sure if this could be trans. related.

Are these the issues that led up to the flash at 100 miles? Obviously this is not normal operation and you should return to the dealer for further diagnosis. If you feel that you can consistantly reproduce the problems, suggest to the sevice manager that you drive while he or another tech rides along. The common thing is, all your issues are occurring at low or no speed. How does your truck perform in other ranges? Hopefully other more knowledgable members will chime in. Keep us posted.

In the owners manual "engine braking" is called "Grade Braking". The Allison / Duramax and the 6 speed Hydra-Matic 6.0's both have this feature. It will downshift the transmission to help slow the vehicle when in Tow / Haul Mode and the Range Selection Mode is not on. All of the functions of the Grade Brake are described in the owners manual in the Tow / Haul Mode section of the manual. In the manual it states " Grade Braking assists in maintaining desired vehicle speeds when driving on downhill grades by automatically implementing a shift schedule that utilizes the engine and transmission to slow the vehicle". It works really well to reduce the amount of braking required when you are pulling a heavy trailer.

I wrote a letter to GM and explained a GM problem I had in processing the trade of my previous truck for the new truck. I was not getting what I felt was adequate response from the dealer. GM customer service called me after they received the letter. They listened to my complaint. They called the dealer and spoke to them about their version of my complaint. They called me back with a resolution that I was satisfied with. They gave me their number and asked that I call them anytime I had a problem with my truck. The lady who I dealt with was very professional and a good listener. She was the best customer service agent I have ever dealt with. I strongly encourage you to give them a call if the dealer can't make you happy.

The vibration, was felt by a service advisor, and the service manager.

For those asking I have the 6-speed transmission.

The vibration, and engine hard breaking were prior, and still consistent after the flash.

The surging once I have stopped just recently started

Truck performs flawlessly at highspeed, and general speed ranges, just the low ranges that seems finicky.

Also, when I start her up in the morning, if I don't give adequate, and I mean adequate time for it to run a bit, if I give it gas to go, it will lurch and have 0 power. I know you have to let vehicles warm up but dang, I can't sit for 5 minutes.

Not normal.

Have you towed the same load w/ both the Tundra and the 2500HD/6.0? I'd be curious to hear your overall comparison.

My 09 2500 6.0 does this also but only for about 60 seconds though. When I first start the engine it idles very rough and if I try to drive the truck it surges. Haven't been to the dealer yet.

My truck a SWB 2WD STD-Cab Work truck w/ 6.0L & 6-Speed (2008) model does almost everything the OP says his does. When I slow to a light or stop, mostly when the motor is still cold there is a slight kick or buck in the trans around 5-10 mph before the truck fully stops. Also occationally the ingine feels rougher than normal just idling, I asked this question before on this forum and everyone said that is normal for the 6.0L. I have driven a Tundra with the 5.7L and can see what the OP is talking about, that motor idles Lexus smooth no matter if it's cold or hot, the trans always shifts smooth too. I still think the GMT900 trucks are a lot better and a lot more heavy duty but my trans can be a bit finicky too at times. Other weird things when I'm accelerating the trans will sometimes shift up way earlier than i desired. All things aside I still love it though.
