Paint Protection?

Anyone purchased the extra paint protection from the dealer? You know the stuff that is suppose to protect your paint surface from bird crap, acid rain and nuclear fallout...with today's paint quality and clear coat...is this "extra protection" even necessary or just another way for the dealer to make money...I am leaning towards the latter

I just bought a new Tahoe and went through that spill by the dealer. I was polite but just laughed to myself as they told me about the "molecular bonding" of the product to the paints surface. It is nothing more then a polish. They even give you a bottle to "refresh" the product twice a year. You can just polish twice a year with the same results and a lot cheaper.

I bought that package with the leather protection and so forth. They say its supposed to keep the paint looking new/glossy. I haven't had to wax so far she's still shiny after every wash. They didn't give me any touch-ups or so but I hope later on I don't have to wax often but time will tell. On my G6 I had before it took hours to wax!!

I actually sell the stuff. I agree it is usually overpriced, forced or sneaked on to the customer, or presented in a bad way at many dealerships. However the product itself is really good. The guys that work here at our dealership always have the stuff put on thier own vehicles because it works. For example... In San Antonio several years ago, we had a fire at a dump that burned for two months. The fallout was like volcanic ash. The vehicles that had this application only required a wash, while the other vehicles we had to clay to get the gunk off and get them to shine. You can also feel the difference to the touch. Treated vehicles will be slick like glass if applied properly. The real benefit will be protection from bird droppings which have a high acid content and will etch your paint if left on too long. On the inside, the stuff will protect against stains and is way better than Scotchguard. What you are really paying for is the guarantee that the company backs it with. There are different terms and coverage, but for the most part it guarantees from 5 - 7 years. If you get a stain of any kind, small punctures or tears, they agree to fix it or replace seat covers / carpets at no cost. On the outside, they guarantee against etching, fading, dulling, but not scrathes. There is only really one big supplier of this, Resistal, but there are some smaller companies doing this too and I will not vouch for them. They are national and will come to you so you do not even need to bring it in to the dealership. Even customers who opt not to purchase the extra coverage generally can appreciate the benefits once I explained it properly and not tried to force it down their throats in an unscrupolous manner.

When I worked at a Chevy dealer years ago they sold Ziebart paint protection. When the employee brought the vehicle in the garage all he did was wax it with a cheap liquid wax. I don't know what they charged but it was a rip-off. :)

When i bought our Acadia in 2008, it was already part of the sticker price ($500), and no matter how hard I tried, they would not negotiate it out. So, we went ahead and have been doing the re-application every 6 months. I think it looks great, and it does clean up well. The service we have is called "Auto Butler". Along with the sealant, they detail the vehicle, wash the mats, apply leather protection, etc. It's not as good as I can do myself with Meguiar's products, but it's decent.

When I bought the 2010 Sierra a few days ago, they offered me a "returning customer" discount on the paint sealant. It was $200. I figure I can bring the truck in every 6 months for an oil change (Mobil 1), tire rotation, and to have the sealant/wax reapplied. One stop maintenance for the next 5 years!

I will say it isn't bad or worthless. But for the $500 that the ford dealership that owns the detail shop I work at charges, it is rediculous. It's simply a special wax job, some fancy scotchguard on the carpet/seats, and leather protectant on the seats.

Saying that I have a gallon of the wax that was going to be thrown out, and is a bit watery, but still works ok, and I've done a few vehicles, and it does help with bird crap and bugs coming off

I would recommend Poorboys EX-P sealant. Goes on super easy let it cure for 30-60 minutes wipe off and you have a shine and protection that will last for 3-4 months. It is used by professional detailers so you will have to order it online but the stuff is awesome. just make sure the paint is clean and prepped before applying. Plus it's less than 20 bucks a bottle and one bottle will last a long time. No i don't work for them just a happy customer and hobby detailer. :)

I really like the BlackFire Wet Diamond. Easy on and easy off and a great shine. It is an Acrylic Polymer that supposedly lasts but I haven't had it on long enough to attest to that. If you do a search you will find MANY glowing reviews. It does not have any cleaners in it so when you need a cleaner you will first need to use something else. I like the Klasse All In One which is also an Acrylic. It is also easy to use and a cleaner and a sealant and then you can follow it up with the BlackFire Wet Diamond. Both of those products will not stain and leave a white residue if you get it on your trim. Here is a link. http://properautocare.com/blacallfinpa.html

Lots of great products to try...I ended up not getting the dealer paint package. I posted a picture of the new truck under the Heavy Duty truck section...
