VIN Numbers and Date of Manufacturer

Are the VIN numbers determined prior to the vehicle being manufactured or at the time of the vehicle build?  My Envoy XL has a June 4 build date, is this accurate within a day or a week sitting in inventory to be shipped out.  Also, when did the 2003 start production?

VIN are assigned long before the vehicle is manufactered. It is assigned when it is scheduled. Take for example a friend just ordered (well 4 months ago) a 2003 ford expedition. He has just received his vin last thursday for his scheduled build third week of october. VINs idendify the model/options for the vehicle for the plant and the scheduler.

I know the GMC dealers had 2003 Envoys on the ground in August.
