Like A Rock?

I hate to say this but the sheet metal on the new Silverado's (or maybe its just my 08) is crap, its thin and dents very easy. I was back in my truck in the garage the other night and one of our baby strollers was out, well it was dark and didn't see it, after i got out I noticed the stroller stuck between my truck and a trash can. I pull out and notice my truck (drivers side behind the rear tire) and a nice 8" x 3" dent. There are many spots on my truck that I can move the sheet metal 1/2" just by pressing hard with my index finger. Not very impressed at all.

 

Sorry......i just felt the need to bitch about the truck that is "like a rock"

I can't bump into anything without it costing over 2000$ in body damage.

 

 

 

 

 

I think they do it because of costs and accidents, crumple zones and how a vehicle will collapse in an accident??

I'm thinking in this day and age.. It's all about weight, gas mileage and emissions.....lighter body weight = means thinner parts = less emissions and better gas mileage?

Sheetmetal is not what it once was for sure. As fuel economy becomes a bigger issue, and everybody has to have ever modern convenience in their "truck", they opted to make em thinner to save weight.

You are probably right. Personally, I prefer a solid truck like my 94 versus something newer that is all about gas mileage. If I wanted something with awesome gas mileage I would buy a prius. Unfortunately GM doesn't design them with the same goals in mind anymore. I know they have to follow the trends, it just sucks.

In all fairness, it wouldn't have dented had you not hit it. Yes the sheet metal is thin, but that is the price you pay for a truck that gets 15-20 MPG rather than 6 MPG.

I hear you I was very surprised when I almost dented mine. I think the f-150 is even worse, back when I was car shopping I drove one and was so surprised at how thin the sheet metal was, felt so cheap. Needless to say I stuck with GM and am on my 3rd Gm product.

Do you think it's the newer ones that are thinner? My '00 just went through a hell of a hailstorm with no damage. I thought it was the end of her. Arizona had some weird weather last week.

No that was my fault, that being said my truck should not damage so easily. Today everything is built like crap, its all about gas mileage, lite weight and what not. Its very embarrasing to me to see American put out a product like this. I can grab the ends of my rear bumper that curve around under the lights and bend them....are you kiding me?

Have you ever seen a nissan titan driving down the road? You will appreciate your silverado much more if you watch them. I seen one last week and on a smooth road it looked like the bed was going to come unglued.

A few weeks ago, I backed into a mid-sized tree in my friend's backyard, truck was in reverse, no acceleration, foot hovering the brake. I mis-judge and yes, was my fault I backed into the tree, but:

 

$2800 later, half of a new bumper and the replacement of the entire passenger side of my bed ... I agree.

 

The bodyshop explained the thin sheet metal for 2 reasons: gas mileage and crash tests.
