had an sks and an m-40(mosin nagant bolt action carbine) they are rugged guns, kick like a donkey though...sks account for the majority of deaths of soldiers, its an amazing sniper rifle

i've got a chinese made norinco sks---the sks shoots a 7.62x39 bullet (same bullet as ak 47),you can get good cheap non corrosive ammo from wolf for a decent pirce- you can use an sks to hunt deer-oh yea mods are pretty common for sks's so if you wanted to add a 30 round clip and make it fully auto then you can do it

as for mosin nagant's... ive got three of them

I own a beautiful 1954 Russian SKS, made in Tula. 100% original, never refurbed and 100% numbers matching. Im currently shopping for one that isn't in quite so nice condition so I can go shooting more often. This one is worth keeping nice.

The russian sks I bought doesn't have matching stock to reciever cover.. but the reciever bolt is un-painted...

I can't wait to shoot it, I bought 1000 rounds of chzech ammo..

Im thinking of getting a synthetic stock ATI or Tapco

If this is your first sks keep in mind that the firing pin does not have a spring so when you snap the bolt shut there is a good chance you will send a bullet down range.

Thats not completely true, there is a chance of slam firing the round but as long as your diligent about your gun safety rules and take some very basic precautions its extremely unlikely. I have owned a couple SKS's and have shot dozens and have never had one slam fire on me. Every one (unless its mine and I know the condition of the bolt) is field stripped and verified the firing pin freely moves inside the bolt. Simple exercise that makes this weapon a wonderful addition to the arsenal.

Thanks for the heads up and concern.

Fortunatly I already spent a few hours with the gun completely disassembled, I washed all metal parts with brake clean, gun solvent and then a light coat of gun oil and then the wood stock with hot soapy water to wash the gunk they use to store the thing...

I paid special attention to the firing pin, and I'll be sure to check it one more time when I get to the range with it for the first time, its easy to take apart so no problem there, I'll probably clean the thing right after I fire it seeing as how the ammo is "corrosive".

I'm thinking I'd like to get a plastic stock. You guys know anything about TAPCO or ATI stocks??

corrorsive ammo is rather rare now, its not harmful unless you send 1000s of rounds through it without a good cleaning...p.s making it full auto is a bad idea

Im not really schooled yet on how ammo is corrosive or which ammo is considered corrosive, but when I bought the sks, I bought 1000 rounds of this Sellier & Bellot Army Surplus/1976 says its from Czech Republic... 209$ seemed fair... They also sell hunting loads (20 bullets) for just over 20$ I think the guy said.

I've always tried to keep my guns cleaned after shooting, well the rifles at least...

I wouldn't make it auto, as cool as full auto would be, I think it'd be uncontrolable on this gun, and really where could you shoot it anyways? Its just not worth it IMO.
